John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is a 14,000 acre park near Kimberly, Oregon. Located within the John Day River Basin, this monument is world-renowned for fossils of plants and animals.
Over 14,000 acres found in 3 units: the Sheep Rock Unit, near Dayville, featuring Blue Basin and Foree areas; the Painted Hills Unit, ten miles from Mitchell; and Clarno Unit, 15 mi south of Fossil.
The Painted Hills are listed as one of the seven wonders of Oregon. They are located 9 miles NW of Mitchell, Or and are part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.You will be amazed by all the layered colors and patterns. This destination is approximately 1.5 hours from Redmond , which makes them an ideal day trip outing.
