Among many other things, the Castro Theatre is known for its sing-alongs, when it screens popular musicals with captions so that the audience can belt those lyrics together. Expect a very energetic crowd—the staff often hands out goodie bags with various props for everyone to use throughout the movie. They’ve shown movies like Sound of Music, The Little Mermaid, and Grease. Definitely wear something fun if you can—there’s often a costume contest. And if you get there early, you’ll get a chance to hear the in-house organist perform.

Historic old movie theater and performance venue in the heart of the Castro. Check their calendar for movies and special events. You're lucky if their organ player opens the show at the organ in front.
Grand 1920s movie palace! This is the place to catch vintage films, sing-a-longs (super popular!), film festivals, and the occasional live show/speaker.
Historic and iconic 1922 Castro theatre with unique movie runs, film festivals, sing-a-longs, just go and pick up the schedule. Since 1978, organist, David Hegarty has delighted visitors with amazing organ recital before each film. Castrotheatre.com davidhegarty.com castroorgan.org
This old-school movie palace has been a fixture in the Castro neighborhood since 1922. The grand interior and signature pre-show organ music are worth the price of admission alone — but stick around for their ever-changing roster of classic films, spirited sing-alongs, and rotating film festivals. Absolutely one of our favorite destinations in SF!
My favorite old movie theater in the city... Lots and lots of charm and they have great festivals here! And pay tribute to great old directors like Fassbinder, Antonioni and Hitchcock! The film noir festival, hosted by Eddie Muller, is in January and the Berlin and Beyond film festival arrives soon after. The architecture is beautiful...there is a turkish tent style ceiling and art deco paintings. Don't miss taking a look at this historic gem!
