Between the Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park , MTNM encompasses 1.6 million acres of desert mountains, lava flows, and sand dunes. It also contains modern cultural remnants, such as the longest undeveloped stretch of Route 66, the “Mother Road” in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath, and immortalized in the 1946 tune “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66”. Remnants of WWII General George Patton’s astonishing Desert Training Center, the largest military training ground in history, are preserved within, where over 1 million soldiers and 38,000 vehicles and tanks roamed and trained for desert warfare.

A wonderful new (2016) national monument that includes parts of the Desert Training Center where General Patton trained troops before the invasion of North Africa in World War II, as well as stretches of America's Mother Road - Route 66. Plenty to explore!
