Vallisaari island is just a 15 min boat trip from Kauppatori. It used to be a military installation that was closed to the public. This allowed the nature on the island to thrive.

The island of Vallisaari between Santahamina and Suomenlinna opened up to the public in May 2016. Formerly used by the Finnish Defence Forces, the island offers visitors the chance to enjoy its diverse flora and spectacular views, as well as its well preserved historic fortifications. In its first year Vallisaari can be explored along marked trails, and guided tours are also available. A ferry connection from the Market Square.
