The island near Hudson is a gem in upstate new york. Buried on an island in the Hudson is bannerman castle and beneath the brittle body of the century old castle walls and thin hair of tangled vines, lie Civil War bayonet scabbards and the ashes of Irish linen bed sheets. Bannerman Castle is the remnant of a Scotsman's fortress -- built not as a home, but as an arsenal for his immense collection of weapons. Public access to this island has had a small window of opportunity, curtained by Native American and Dutch settler's fear of resident spirits and goblins, and then restricted since 1900 for more contemporary safety reasons.

There is a crazy Scottish-style castle in the middle of the Hudson directly across from Sparrow House. Its incredibly beautiful and filled with amazing history. You can take a boat or kayak tour to the island; it’s definitely worthwhile if you’re a history buff. Info here: www.bannermancastle. org/visit-the-island.html

Not really in Fishkill. Tours depart from Beacon Long Dock; 20 minute cruise to Bannerman's (AKA Pollepel Island) historic site; grounds and garden; fun guided tours. A nice outing on the river.
