The most important secession-style monument in Oradea is of course the Black Eagle Palace located in Unirii Square. On the site of this building, built according to the plans of architects Jakab Dezső and Komor Marcell in the years 1907-1908, was the Green Tree Inn has existed since 1714, which was housed in a small house with a ground floor. The New City Hall housed the same building. In the sec. XVIII-XIX the building was storeyed and extended. In 1861 the town hall moved to the Olosig district, leaving only the inn in the building. The Black Eagle Palace was equipped with the largest hall in the city, being used for various purposes (cinema hall, shows, concerts). The interior of the palace is decorated in a secession style, characterized by an abundance of interior elements (ceilings, vaults, windows, doors, paneling, railings, walls, columns, sandblasted glass, or stained glass) characteristic in the first decade of our century, as an expression of architectural sensibilities and artistic concepts.

This ensemble of buildings is one of the monumental architectural works in Oradea and Transylvania, typical for the secession style. The architects Komor Marcell and Jakab Dezső won the contest for the construction of this complex. Two Jewish lawyers, Dr. Kurlander Ede and Dr. Emil Adorjan, decided to finance, using their own resources, the construction of a noteworthy building in Oradea. The work started in 1907, under the supervision of the civil engineer Sztarill Ferenc, and in December 1908 the building was completed. Consisting of two unequal and asymmetrical buildings, connected to a third one, placed in the middle and more isolated, the complex housed a theatre, ballrooms, a casino and offices. The Y-shaped gallery (passage) has three entrances. The Vittorio Emanuele Gallery in Milan inspired the glass-covered interior. The gallery or the Passage, as the local people know it, concentrates the most popular bars, coffee houses and pubs in the city, being the entertainment high spot of the city.
