City/town information

Culturally speaking, D.C. is still as politically charged as you've heard: Networking is so embedded in the daily goings-on, the question "So, what do you do?" is a local punchline. The place is about power plays and shaking things up—but the buttoned-up Hill and K Street are hardly representative. The city has always attracted insurgents, nonconformists, and punks, and in recent years, they’ve made their presence known across dining, arts, and activism. From the smartly revitalized Wharf and Navy Yards—where the city’s long-dormant sports scene has been reawakened—to neighborhoods like U Street and Adams Morgan, luring fans to spots like Maydan, which blends Middle Eastern and North African flavors, and to the recent, avant-garde hotel newcomers, it’s the people away from the seat of the Capitol shaping the city today.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (most people still use the old name ‘National’) is the closest to DC, located just across the Potomac River from Downtown, and gives a great view of the monuments as you fly in; it’s used mostly for short- and medium-haul flights within the US and Canada.

Washington Union Station is one of the country’s first great union railroad terminals. Designed by renowned architect, Daniel Burnham, the station opened on October 27, 1907 and was completed in April 1908. During its heyday in the early 1940’s, Union Station was a thriving transportation hub serving up to 42,000 passengers daily. After 1945, conditions deteriorated quickly. The demand on transportation during World War II wore greatly on the station, and repairs were often done inexpensively, diminishing the station’s elegance. Public trends shifted from rail to cars and planes for long-distance travel, which further diminished rail passenger revenues, station activity and the feeling of excitement that once percolated through the building. Washington Union Station is a major train station, transportation hub, and leisure destination in Washington, D.C. It is Amtrak's headquarters and the railroad's second-busiest station with annual ridership of just under 5 million. The station also serves MARC and VRE commuter rail services, the Washington Metro, and buses.

FDR promoted this 1943 shrine to the founder of his Democratic Party, balancing that to the Republicans’ icon, Lincoln. Roosevelt liked it so much he had trees cleared so he could see it from the Oval Office. John Russell Pope designed an adaptation (sneered at by some as "Jefferson’s muffin") of the Roman Pantheon that the architect Jefferson so admired. It echoes the president’s designs for his home, Monticello, and for his rotunda at the University of Virginia. The Georgia marble walls surrounding Jefferson’s 19ft likeness are inscribed with his enduring words. Alas, the 92-word quote from the Declaration of Independence contains 11 spelling mistakes and other inaccuracies.

Part showplace, part workplace, probably one of the world’s most-recognized buildings, it’s hard to imagine now that until the 20th century the public could walk in freely, and the grounds remained open until World War II. Today, visitors simply get to peek at a scant eight rooms out of the house’s 132, and with little time to linger (the tour can take as little as 20 minutes). The public tour is self-guided (though highly regimented) and there’s not much in the way of interpretation, but the nation proudly clings to keeping its leader’s residence open to the public.

It’s been a long time coming, but African-Americans have finally found their place on the National Mall. The National Museum of African American History & Culture is set to open in 2015, and the Martin Luther King Memorial was dedicated in late 2011—the result of years of campaigning and fundraising. On the south-west of the Mall, with an official address—1964 Independence Avenue—that references the year of the passing of the Civil Rights Act, the location was chosen to create a symbolic, visual "line of leadership" with the Lincoln Memorial. It was here that King made his legendary "I have a dream" speech in 1963 at the culmination of the March on Washington.

Dedicated in 2004, the monument that honors America’s "Greatest Generation" is a grandiose affair on a 7.4-acre plot. Designed by Friedrich St Florian, it is a granite-heavy space dominated by the central Rainbow Pool, which is set between two 43ft triumphal arches, representing the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war. Fifty-six wreath-crowned pillars represent the US states and territories (including the Philippines), while a bronze Freedom Wall displays 4,000 gold stars, each signifying 100 war dead. The ceremonial entrance, descending from 17th Street, passes bas-reliefs depicting events of the global conflict. A Circle of Remembrance garden off to the side fosters quiet reflection.

Gravelly Point is a park in Arlington, Virginia, United States. It is located north of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, along the George Washington Parkway, and across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Today, the park is a primary intersection on weekends of boaters, cyclists, and airplane-spotters. Its unique location just a few hundred feet from the north end of Reagan's runway 1/19 makes it one of the best spots in the United States for airplane-spotting. Originally, the area known as Gravelly Point was where Captain John Alexander built a home called Abingdon in 1746. Abingdon was purchased in 1778 by John Parke Custis, the adopted stepson of President George Washington. It was the birthplace of Washington's beloved granddaughter, Eleanor Parke Custis. Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and the ruins stabilized. In 1998, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority preserved the site and created an exhibit of artifacts found there in the Exhibit Hall, located in Terminal A of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The Washington Monument was completed in 1884, 101 years after Congress authorized it. It rises in a straight line between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, but is off-center between the White House and the Jefferson Memorial because the original site was too marshy for its bulk. Private funding ran out in the 1850s, when only the stump of the obelisk had been erected. Building resumed in 1876, producing a slight change in the color of the marble about a third of the way up. The 555ft monument—the tallest free-standing masonry structure in the world—was capped with solid aluminium, then a rare material.

This monument, which honors the 12 million Americans who fought in the Cold War conflict in Korea, features 19 battle-clad, seven-foot soldiers slogging across a V-shaped field towards a distant US flag. Their finely detailed faces reflect the fatigue and pain of battle, while bulky packs show beneath their ponchos. Reflected in the polished granite wall, these 19 become 38—in reference to the 38th parallel separating North and South Korea. Unlike the wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, this shows a subtle mural sandblasted into rock, a photo-montage of the support troops—drivers and medics, nurses and chaplains.

The national library of the US, the Library of Congress is the world’s largest. Its three buildings hold some 100 million items—including the papers of 23 US presidents—along 535 miles of bookshelves. Contrary to popular notion, the library does not have a copy of every book ever printed, but its heaving shelves are still spectacular. To get to grips with the place, it’s best to start with the 20-minute film in the ground-floor visitors’ center, excerpted from a TV documentary, which provides a clear picture of the place’s scope and size. An even better option is to join a guided tour.

In 1842, the Navy’s Wilkes Expedition returned from exploring Fiji and South America, showering Congress with a cornucopia of exotic flora. The present conservatory was erected in 1930 and recently modernized with state-of-the-art climate controls and a coconut-level catwalk around the central rainforest. The conservatory displays 4,000 plants, including endangered species. Themed displays feature the desert and the oasis, plant adaptations and the primeval garden. The orchid collection is a particular delight.

Since its opening in 1993, the Holocaust Museum has attracted legions of visitors to its permanent exhibition, The Holocaust. The three-floor exhibition, containing over 900 artifacts, many video screens and four theaters showing archive footage and survivor testimony, presents a chronological history of the Nazi holocaust. On the top level, Nazi Assault covers the rise of Hitler and Nazism in the mid 1930s; the incarceration of Jews in ghettos and their murder—along with gypsies and many others—in death camps in the 1940s is the focus of Final Solution on the third floor; on the second floor, Last Chapter covers Allied liberation and subsequent war-crime trials.

Despite its appearance on the penny and the $5 bill, the Lincoln Memorial is perhaps most recognisable as the site of historic demonstrations. In 1939, when the Daughters of the American Revolution barred the African-American contralto Marian Anderson from singing in their Constitution Hall, she performed for more than 75,000 people from these steps. It was here that Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech in 1963. Just a few months later, President Lyndon Johnson led candle-carrying crowds in ceremonies concluding national mourning for John F. Kennedy.

Nothing signifies the arrival of spring in the nation's capital quite like the blooming of the cherry blossom trees and the National Cherry Blossom Festival to celebrate the occasion. Visitors descend upon Washington, DC each year to admire the 3,000-plus trees. The Festival, which runs from March 18 – April 16, 2023, is full of events that honor American and Japanese cultures and represents a close bond forged between the two countries that began with Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki’s gift of the trees back in 1912. Peak blooming season for 2023 is currently March 22-25th.

Ben’s Chili Bowl, which opened in 1958, looks like a relic on the yuppified stretch of U Street once known as Black Broadway. But this 100-percent wind-powered business has kept up with the times. The family-owned institution’s appeal rests on three legs: nostalgia (past customers include Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Barack Obama), the insatiable late-night hunger of young partiers, and, of course, the great bang for the buck afforded by burgers, fries and chili. In-the-know customers order chili on a dog or half smoke (arguably Washington’s signature specialty) and cheesefries, but you can also get a turkey sub or a veggie burger.

Thank goodness chef Katsuya Fukushima was never told to stop playing with his food. (Or if he was, thank goodness he didn’t listen.) The former culinary director at Jose Andres’s ThinkFoodGroup has so many good ideas he opened two restaurant concepts under one roof. Upstairs: a fast-paced izakaya with clever small plates (like cod roe spaghetti and a grilled avocado) and inventive cocktails (like a spherified sake bomb floating in a glass of Sapporo beer.)

Hip twentysomethings squeeze into this tiny spot to slurp big bowls of ramen in rich, house-made broth. The dumplings are great, too—we especially like the grilled pork ones—and there are more than 20 kinds of saké available. The space is decorated with graffiti, skateboards and comic books and, for dessert, you can dunk warm chocolate-chip cookies in a glass of milk. What’s not to like? Just one thing: The wait for seats can take a couple of hours. The spot doesn't take reservations, but you can hang out at the bar downstairs until the staff texts you.

Don’t let the name fool you: Nothing about this humming Dupont Circle pub resembles a grocery store. Rather it has whitewashed brick walls, London street signs and a front patio strung with café lights. The short and sweet menu changes daily and is inspired by East London’s eclectic restaurant scene. That means you’ll find catfish banh mi mingling with a Za’atar-spiced eggplant sandwich and a curried vegetable bowl. The most popular dish by far is the proper burger, made with Angus beef, melted Gouda, sweet chili sauce and arugula.

This is the perfect place for a quick bite, whether it’s two in the afternoon or two in the morning (although beware the long, hungry lines that form in the early hours). The choices at the counter are simplicity itself: small or large? Wholewheat pita or white? Fries with that? (Say yes—they’re the best in town.) You’ll face tougher decisions at the extensive toppings bar, which includes hummus, grilled eggplant, marinated cucumber, and more—much more, sadly, than can fit in one pita. This might be the best deal in town.

Bar scene

Were Jim Morrison ever to be reincarnated and transported to Washington, DC, the response to his immortal request, "Show me the way to the next whiskey bar" would inevitably lead him to Jack Rose. This is, quite simply, the best place to drink whiskey in Washington, with a remarkable selection of more than 2,700 bottles. The tall, clubby space feels like a library with leather seats and ladders, a necessary feature to help bartenders reach the highest bottles; if you don’t know much (or anything) about whiskey, don’t be afraid to ask—the bartenders are happy to impart their wisdom. On sunnier days, there’s also an outdoor terrace and tiki bar.

This beloved spot in the Navy Yard neighborhood is a paradise for craft beer connoisseurs thanks to dozens of draft selections and a rotating burger of the week. All beers come in two sizes—a tasting portion and a full glass—so you can try a few before you commit to anything. The friendly servers are more than happy to walk you through the menu to make sure you're happy with your selection.

Cocktails. Dumplings. Repeat. That’s pretty much the game plan at this H Street, a casual venue by Minibar veteran Devin Gong. The kitchen serves Chinese street food (steamed bao, potstickers, and meat skewers) indoors while a patio bar delivers artful concoctions borrowed from mixologists Gong has met and liked (hence the name). Can’t find something you like? Check out the blackboard filled with flavor combinations and build your own cocktail from scratch.

For a rooftop brunch, the dedicated tailgate menu at Brixton (wings, burgers, and $6 drafts) ticks all the boxes. But you can also settle down inside for lounge dining on dishes like pan-seared salmon, pork chops, and veggie burgers along with popular drinks like Pimm’s cups, Newcastle on draft, and Fuller’s London Pride in bottles. The vibe inside is that of a classic neighborhood pub with leather stools and wood accents, and it stays cozy most nights (though it can get busy with college kids late at night).

This Petworth favorite comes from the owners of Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights. The upstairs bar serves as the setting for a popular trivia night, while the lower-level hosts DJ nights that sometimes highlight ‘90s hip hop or ‘80s music. The back patio is a low-key mingling scene and the weekday happy hour is a great way to stretch your buck.

Biergarten Haus is a Bavarian-style beer hall with one-liter pours and robust German food. The outdoor patio is one of the largest in the area, while inside you’ll find a folksy sports vibe. Indeed, the TVs are tuned in for soccer and football, while patrons can also stop by the occasional trivia night. No matter what brings you in, it’s hands down the most welcoming spot to grab a brat and a pint.

Uber/Lyft is the way to go, especially at night.

The easiest way in and out of the neighborhood is to use Uber or Lyft. Particularly at night. There's a metro bus depot up the street so you can use either Google Maps or CityMapper for the up-to-date times for the buses that will take you towards the closest metro stations - Anacostia Metro and Potomac Ave Metro, and into Downtown DC.
