Tucked away on Governors Island is a charming but deserted WWII-era movie theater left over from when the island was a military base. I used to wander in here as a kid on summer days. The theater has a cute little box office in front, and in its heyday you could see a double feature for $2. It’s not operational, but you can go in at your own risk. Free ferries leave from South Street in Manhattan and from Brooklyn Bridge Park every 30 to 60 minutes.

Built as a defensive fort in colonial days then an Army base, next came the Coast Guard and now an Art Park. Ferry service on week-ends from Pier 6 at the foot of Atlantic Avenue.

You need to take the ferry to go to Governor’s Island! This location is seasonal, so they open in the Spring. If you arrive at before 10 entrance is free! And you can also bike ride around the island to see the Statue of Liberty from afar. You won’t be able to get a close up, but you can still see…

For only a $3 ferry ride (which is enjoyable in itself!), you can visit one of the most unique places in New York. Full of history, beautiful scenery and gorgeous architecture, this is a fun sightseeing spot to visit!

Parco
“Nestled on the shores of the East River lies the 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park, an appealing place to relax and enjoy views of the bustling New York harbor, Statue of Liberty, and both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. The park features a 1920s restored carousel, playgrounds, piers, and lawns for picnicking. Visitors can enjoy events like outdoor movies, concerts, fitness classes, rowing, kayaking, and more. Other amenities include basketball courts, an in-line skating rink, and a small beach for non-motorized boat launch. A seasonal ferry brings folks from the park to Governors Island.”

Parco
“Beginning at the Grand Army Plaza's Triumphal Arch and encircled by the neighborhoods of Park Slope, Crown Heights, and Windsor Terrace, 526-acre Prospect Park is a happening gathering place for local residents. You can see them using the paths for running, biking, dog-walking, exploring the Ravine forest, and picnicking on the Long Meadow and Nethermead. The bucolic park, with its intricate man-made wetlands and trees, is designed by the same architects behind New York's Central Park: Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. It includes similar attractions such as a boathouse, zoo, lake, sporting fields, ice rink, carousel, band shell, and an array of playing fields and recreational activities. Prospect Park also boasts the first urban Audubon Center, run in partnership between Audubon New York and the Prospect Park Alliance. On Sundays near the Breeze Hill entrance, a Smorgasburg Prospect Park food festival serves a range of cuisines from local restaurants from April to October.”
