Our national zoo - and it’s free! The Amazonia exhibit and the pandas are highlights.
Renowned National Zoo, lots of walking and it is hilly, but not to be missed especially with the kids.
This is my absolute favorite place to take the kids in the city. It’s easy to get to by car, plenty of paid parking (and if you get lucky free parking on Connecticut), and lots of great things to see. They have pandas, elephants, giraffes, apes, lions and way more.
Allow yourselves time to visit as it is a large park. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water.
Always free of charge, the Smithsonian National Zoo is one of Washington D.C.'s and the Smithsonian's most popular tourist spots.

“(4.5 miles) We have probably spent more hours here than any other place in DC. There is something for everyone including hands-on demonstrations, 3-D IMAX movies ( these cost), and a McDonalds that sometimes has aircraft from the museum in their Happy Meals. Even if you’re an adult, it may be worth it to order a couple of Happy Meals.”

“Great museum for kids to explore. It gets crowded so reserve your (free) entry pass in advance.”

“Enjoy over 1,700 acres of greenery at one of our top urban parks! Running from northwest DC into Maryland, Rock Creek Park is a popular retreat for the city’s outdoor enthusiasts. Take in the lush greenery, 32 miles of trails and picnic areas and a nature center. Fun Fact: At 1,754 acres, Rock Creek Park is more than twice the size of Central Park (843 acres)!”

“The National Mall is basically Washington DC’s backyard – it’s a grassy lawn where visitors and locals hang out on sunny days. Full of world-class museums (we’ll get to this later) and fun festivals, the National Mall is the center of many activities in the city.”

“This cultural gem is an architectural highlight, and has so much programming! From broadway hits to local artists. Check out free 6pm shows every night, and the beer and wine garden recently added looking over the Potomac.”
