National Museum of Resistance and Freedom, located at the Fort of Peniche, is where political prisoners were held during the military dictatorship under Salazar. On April 25 1974 Salazar was overthrown by the Armed Forces Movement when the prisoners were finally freed.
was built in 1557 by King John III. It was one of Portugal major defense forts until the 19th century. The views are outstanding & its a fabulous building to view & excellent for photo's.
Vital part of Peniche's history. Parts of the fortress are closed for renovation works, but the museum is still open.
