Country residence of the Pamphilj family, under the pontificate of Innocent X (1644-1655) it assumed the appearance of a sumptuous noble country residence, then enlarged in 1856 by Prince Andrea V Doria Pamphilj who purchased the Villa Corsini at Porta San Pancrazio. In 1957 the Italian State acquired the original nucleus; part of the current 184 hectares were acquired by the Municipality of Rome in 1965 and 1971, finally making it possible to open this park to the public. Numerous parts of the villa still preserve considerable evidence of the Roman and medieval period: the northern border along the Via Aurelia Antica coincides in part with the structures of the Trajan aqueduct Paolo; in numerous areas of the park important funerary structures of Roman age have been identified (particularly significant those brought to light at the Casino del Bel Respiro); Casale di Giovio preserves examples of highly valuable imperial walls and a decorated early medieval architrave. It was however during the pontificate of Innocent X, in the mid-seventeenth century, that the Casino del Bel Respiro was built, with the adjoining gardens adorned with fountains, to which some of the greatest artists of the time such as Alessandro Algardi, Giovan Francesco Grimaldi and Gian Lorenzo worked Bernini. Among the works created in the second half of the nineteenth century, following the battles fought in the Janiculum area and in the same villa during the extreme defense of the Second Roman Republic (1849), we should mention: the Arco dei Quattro Venti, monumental entrance to the Villa; the renovation of the Corsini Building; le Serre and the Monument to the French Fallen. Residenza di campagna della famiglia Pamphilj, sotto il pontificato di Innocenzo X (1644-1655) assunse l’aspetto di una fastosa residenza nobiliare di campagna, ampliata poi nel 1856 dal Principe Andrea V Doria Pamphilj che acquistò la Villa Corsini a Porta San Pancrazio. Nel 1957 Stato Italiano acquisì il nucleo originario; parte dei 184 ettari attuali furono acquisiti dal Comune di Roma nel 1965 e nel 1971, rendendo finalmente possibile l’apertura al pubblico di questo parco. Numerose parti della villa conservano tuttora cospicue testimonianze dell’epoca romana e medioevale: il confine settentrionale lungo la Via Aurelia Antica coincide in parte con le strutture dell’acquedotto Traiano Paolo; in numerosi settori del parco sono state individuate importanti strutture funerarie di età romana (particolarmente significative quelle messe in luce presso il Casino del Bel Respiro); il Casale di Giovio conserva esempi di murature di età imperiale di grande pregio e un architrave decorato altomedievale. Fu tuttavia durante il pontificato di Innocenzo X, a metà del Seicento, che fu edificato il Casino del Bel Respiro, con gli annessi giardini adorni di fontane, a cui lavorarono alcuni dei maggiori artisti del tempo quali Alessandro Algardi, Giovan Francesco Grimaldi, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Tra le opere realizzate nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento, successivamente alle battaglie combattute nell’area del Gianicolo e nella stessa villa durante l’estrema difesa della Seconda Repubblica Romana (1849), vanno segnalate: l’Arco dei Quattro Venti, ingresso monumentale della Villa; la ristrutturazione della Palazzina Corsini; le Serre e il Monumento ai Caduti Francesi.
