Morlaix is a jewel in this part of northern Finistere. Once a very wealthy town there are many beautiful old and some ancient buildings to explore. Well appointed with restaurants and bars there is something for everyone. The market on Saturday mornings is especially recommended. Sited on the estuary of the Baie de Morlaix it provides easy access to many of the fantastic little towns and villages heading north to the sea.

Pretty town with a viaduct, harbour and 16th century timber framed houses.

We visited Morlaix fifty times before we went into the old town itself. We were missing out. The town is a jumble of mediaeval and Victorian Gothic architecture nestled deep in a valley and crowned with a massive Napoleonic railway viaduct - which is used by the TGV. There is excellent shopping to be found in the town, especially on Saturday (market day) although parking is often a squeeze on those days, especially in the summer. There are also some very good restaurants in the town - too many to make a recommendation as yet, but watch this space. Check also for the street art and murals display - these are renewed every year and some of them are absolutely fabulous. Don't take my word for it - go and see for yourself.

Morlaix is a very picturesque town about half an hour by car from Ty Triskell along the N12. Market day is Friday. There are some lovely self guided city walks that will tell you some of the history. There are many medieval buildings to see and visit. There is a museum. Climbing up to the viaduct is quite an exciting experience. There are many cafes and restaurants and it is possible to find vegetarian and vegan food in Morlaix.
