Incredible view where Native Americans used to come and go from the plateau to the valley below. Repelling, hiking, picnic, and camping. To repel, contact park service.

Amazing views that all begin with a simple 1.5 mile hike - Stone Door trail looks as if you're on the set of "Lord of the Rings" but is fun for the whole family. Go the opposite direction at the trailhead to a beautiful waterfall. Part of the ever-expansive South Cumberland State Park.

This is about a two hour drive southeast of Murfreesboro but it is well worth the drive. After about a 45 minute drive on the interstate you exit to regular roads and start ascending the mountain. It is a beautiful drive with lots of gorgeous views. Once you reach Altamont TN, my two favorite sites…

Beautiful scenic bluff areas. Stone door is a large crevice in the rock used for hundreds of years. This is a poplar place for rock climbing and hiking.

“Savage Gulf is 15,590-acre natural area located in Grundy and Sequatchie Counties. Carved like a giant crowfoot into the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau, it is one of Tennessee's most scenic wilderness areas. Its sheer sandstone cliffs and rugged canyons provide extraordinary views. A significant feature is Stone Door, a 10 ft. wide by 100 ft. deep crack, forming from the top of the escarpment into the gorge below. It looks like a giant door left ajar and was once used by Indians as a passageway. Breathtaking waterfalls form at the head of many gorges, where streams drop off over hard sandstone cap rock. ”
