If you want to explore, head out to Old Tunnel State Park by turning left out the Red Barn Inn driveway and go for a nature hike- seasonally watch the bats fly out from the cave! Alamo Springs Cafe is a really unique burger joint right next to Old Tunnel State Park, makes for a great afternoon!
This is home to the second largest bat colony in Texas second to the Congress River Bridge in Austin. The ranger puts on a wonderful presentation and at just the right moment from out of nowhere the bats swarm. Check before you come as the bats are not there in all month.
Enjoy hiking, bird-watching and general wildlife viewing on the half-mile nature trail at Old Tunnel State Park. It is an abandoned railroad tunnel that is home to millions of Mexican free-tailed bats seasonally. Located 10.5 miles south of Highway 290 on the Old San Antonio Road.
If you are a nature lover, this is a great site. One of 5 major bat roosts in Texas, this is a state park at an abandoned railroad tunnel. At dusk, watch 4 mil bats emerge for their nightly foraging. They migrate to the area, so you will only find them around late April to early October. For a few extra dollarget a seat just feet from the tunnel opening. Dinner at Clear Springs Café is a treat and just steps from the park. Let us know if you want info on more bat roosts, including the world's largest bat colony (seasonal, 1.5 hr drive each way). Your co-host, Fran, manages that 1500 ac site.
