Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River, along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria and it was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents were ethnic Germans, but today the population is largely Slovene.

Ptuj is a lovely town with Roman and medieval marks. The medieval castle is a must see with great views on the surroundings and the Drava river. Ptuj is home to a UNESCO recognized Carnaval tradition (Kurentovanje) and is also a great place to come to on Nov 11, which is St Martin Day. The town organizes many new wine tasting on that date
Much underappreciated town, when it comes to tourist visits. See the castle hill views, the old town and enjoy a beverage of your choice somewhere along the river.
The oldest Slovenian town, known for its carnival in the winter., Roman games in August, Medieval castle games in June and celebration of wine festival in November.
The oldest city in Slovenia (every guidebook tells you about it), an enormous metropolis in Roman times, today with a famous pagan carnival, that involves the terrible monsters of winter "kurenti" (google it). Definitely worth a visit at anytime for a half day of strolling and enjoying the quaint streets. You can combine it with Jeruzalem hills or Žiče monastery, Maribor etc. It has an enormous castle with great views and a good museum - collection!
