Outstanding Italian restaurant, with superb atmosphere, located where "The Ancha" ends and splits into Zacateras and Codo. And where Johnny Depp almost died in front of it, in the movie "Once Upon a Time in Mexico", which was filmed in San Miguel. I had dinner here the first night I visited San Miguel, and on my first birthday after moving here.

Drinks & Nightlife

Hank's is a San Miguel institution, and maybe the best place in San Miguel to meet people, both locals and world travelers. A New Orleans-style bar-restaurant, the two for one drinks Happy Hour begins at 5:00 PM and ends at 8:00 PM every day to "La Grange" by ZZ Top. I have met many of my longest term friends here during my first year living in San Miguel.

Sightseeing

The iconic symbol of San Miguel, and center of Centro Historico, The Parroquia is technically not a cathedral but a parish church. But given its grand scale and beauty, unlike any other church in Mexico, I insist on calling it a cathedral.

Arts & Culture

A textile mill from 1902 to 1991, Fabrica La Aurora has since become an art-lover's paradise in northern San Miguel. Just a short walk north from El Jardin, the converted factory shows evidence of the site's history, including oil-stained floors and traces of cotton tucked into crevices. If you're looking to shop, you'll be satisfied by the diverse selection at furniture, jewelry and contemporary art stores that pepper the complex.

This place is very special. Only two blocks from the busy Jardín, it's an oasis of peace and quiet is this noisy town. And it is truly beautiful. You can find art schools and cultural centers in towns and cities all over the world. But not all of them are themselves works of art. This former nunnery has been converted into an all-purpose arts center, with art galleries, theater, museum, poetry readings, and classes in music, dance, art, and writing.
