In 1772, George Washington purchased a house in Fredericksburg, Virginia for his mother, Mary Ball Washington. She spent her last seventeen years in this comfortable home. The white frame house sites on the corner of Charles and Lewis Streets and was within walking distance of Kenmore, the home of Mary's daughter, Betty Washington Lewis. Tradition has it that, during the Revolution, General Lafayette found Mrs. Washington in her garden. As the President-to-be, George Washington came to this home to receive his mother's blessing before attending his inauguration in 1789.

The Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center was built in 1936 as a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project to provide an office for Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park. It later became the visitor center for the Fredericksburg portion of the park. Today it consists of two floor of exhibits and one floor of offices for park historians. A 22 minute film is shown in the auditorium at a cost of $2 for those aged 10-61, $1 for those over 61 and free for those under 10.

While they produced an immense body of work, most, like Melchers, are eclipsed in popular memory by such names as John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt. Rediscovery of Gari Melchers – as well as the many other artists of his time – testifies to the full breadth of our country’s artistic vibrancy in the fertile crossroads between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
