My favorite Mexican restaurant. Located about 5 minutes up the Rio Cuale, out of the main areas and in a local neighborhood. Not tacos and burritos, a real Mexican meal. You MUST start with the Chiles en Nogada as an appetizer to share - or have it as your main like I do... You'll also love the decor, full of Frida art and lore. The owner, Lola, is lovely and her maitre d'hotel is Cuco, who will take good care of you.

On Malecon with good service, reasonable prices and good food. Terrific spot to begin or end an evening stroll on the Malecon. There's an interior with A/C or sit on the terrace and people watch.

One of the top restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, owned by friends Laura (hostess) and Marisol (Chef). Great location on a rooftop above the main plaza. Terrific ocean and Malecon views, and a great place to see the nightly fireworks around 9pm. Marisol has developed a wonderful continental menu fused with traditional and contemporary Mexican flavors and twists. Pricey, and I'd leave the kids home. I think it's best as a romantic dinner or for a group of good friends.

Authentic French Bistro in the old, historic Centro of Puerto Vallarta. Very romantic, excellent service and delicious food. I like their steak au poive. After dinner, stroll the Malecon, which is only 2 blocks away.

On Los Muertos Beach, next door to the well known La Palapa Restaurant (but I think it's much better than La Palapa). Great spot for all occasions - romantic candle-light dinner for two on the sand, good spot for a group or a quality night out with the family. Higher than average price, but worth it.

Terrific staff who will take great care of you. Some people rave about the view, but really, it's not so hot compared to other places, but it doesn't matter - it's fun! A great place to start off an evening and then walk to one of the dozens of restaurants around.

I'm using the nightclub category, but it's really a grown up martini bar and lounge, with live music from 10:30 to 12:30. Get their earlier if you want quiet, but they always have excellent musicians, from show tunes, to jazz, to Latin pop and dance music, salsa, etc. Mostly gay, but always comfortable for everyone, and especially mixed gay/straight on Fridays and Saturdays when they have their best bands. Crowd is generally 40 and over. This is a great place to go with friends, or meet friends (I call it a 'Cheers' place) or to go as a couple after dinner to listen to great live music and be in a fun atmosphere. Tiny dance floor, but they make it work!

A truly high quality botanical garden and one of the best activities you can enjoy alone, with friends or the whole family. About 30 minutes south of town, up in the jungle with hiking trails, a rushing river, orchids and magnificent tropical jungle. There's also a gift shop and a wonderful restaurant with amazing views. I go late morning, enjoy the hikes (some strenuous, some easy) enjoy the foliage and then relax and have lunch.
