Highest point in Pennsylvania at 3,212 feet - about 1200 feet higher than the elevation at Fernwalk. Not exactly a high peak as you would imagine, but if you climb the tower, the 360 degree view can be spectacular, depending on the weather. There are also hiking trails for the adventurous hikers. Open-toed shoes are not recommended for hiking or birding in that area. If you love nature, it's truly worth exploring!

The stone arch Casselman River Bridge which served the National Road was completed in 1815. At that time, the river crossing was know as Little Crossings. During the French and Indian War, the river was forded on horseback. When commerce on the National Road began to boom, the briger was built. At 80-feet it was the longest single span stone arch bridge in the country.

IF water is being released from Yough Lake, it's worth a drive in to see the flow from the tubes at the base of the dam! Just tell the ranger at the window you are simply driving back to look. It can be quite impressive!!! Another fun thing to do is literally drive over the top of the dam. You need to go up RT #281 just a little farther to turn into the road to the dam. For rail-to-trail cyclists or walkers! The closest access to Fernwalk is at Harnedsville, only 6 miles down the road at the Casselman River. We love riding the GAP Trail up river, crossing numerous bridges and going through the Pinkerton Tunnel. If you are fit, you might be able to make it to Rockwood for lunch, or even further... the Meyersdale viaduct. Coming back is a gentle downhill grade, so it helps for the return. You can also leave from Confluence and when you get back, have lunch or dinner and a beer at the Lucky Dog Cafe or a more elegant ending at the River's Edge Cafe.
