Food Scene

These are my favourite places to eat or shop for food when I'm staying in Comrie - I try to go to each one at least once during the week I'm at home!
Good for bar meals and evening drinks, within walking distance. Make sure you book the restaurant in advance in a holiday period because demand can be great. However, nearly always possible to sit for a nice bar meal. Service tends to be slow - relax!

Wonderful quality! Closed Monday nights, open from about 4.30 to 8pm in the evening, all other days. You can also buy fresh fish from them during the day and prepare it yourself in your own kitchen.

A ready-prepared, but home-cooked and delicious meal from the Hansen’s Kitchen delicatessan. Walking distance from the house. All very fresh, in foil containers that you can heat up straight away at home, or put in the freezer to eat another day. They do lovely vegetarian curries and delicious lasagnes, as well as a selection of salads.

An extremely good butcher's shop - sells excellent haggis, made on the premises.

Under new management - I have yet to test, but good things are said. Have a bar lunch their during the day and look out over beautiful Loch Earn. If you eat there in the evening, they do a wonderful pick-up and drop off service from Comrie

Have a lunchtime meal here - it's about 20 minutes' drive from Comrie. Scrumptious soups, sandwiches and desserts – friendly staff. And enjoy wandering around Crieff, the nearest large town to Molly’s House.

Eat lunch here, taking the drive up behind Comrie on the road that goes over the moors. The food is very nice (simple lunchtime fare) and you have a wonderful view of the surrounding hills. The staff are lovely, and if you have children they’ll have a chance to pet a lamb or rabbit.

Sightseeing

There are so many places to sightsee in Perthshire. A good start for ideas (apart from the internet) is the visitors' centre in the square in Crieff.
Stirling is about 3/4 of an hour away and a guided tour around the castle is an absolute must, particularly for anyone interested in Renaissance history and the Stuart kings of Scotland. They have done a wonderful job of restoring and simulating what the Royal apartments would have been like in the 15th and 16th centuries and there are guides around every corner who can tell you a little more about how fabrics, tapestries, etc. were replicated.

Go up Ben Lawers mountain to see the Visitor’s Centre which will tell you so much about walking & nature in the Scottish hills. Ben Lawers has a particularly remarkable flora. The path up to the top of the mountain is long, but not too hard (about 5 hours return journey). It is the highest peak in Perthshire and one of the famous ‘Munros’ (Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet).

The oldest distillery in Scotland, Glenturret (now owned by the Famous Grouse), near Crieff. There are guided tours, fascinating even to those who aren’t partial to whisky – this is an important part of Scottish history! If you have a guided tour, you have a chance to sample different whiskies at the end – or you can take the sample bottles home if you are driving.

A drive up through the Sma’ Glen to either Dunkeld or Aberfeldy (where there are lots of good places to eat) - this glen is quite literally the 'gateway to the Highlands'. Beautiful scenery, especially in August when the heather is flowering. This is the one thing I never fail to do when I am at home.

A day trip to Edinburgh (the castle, the Scottish National Art Gallery, the Royal Mile – and so much more!) It takes no more than 1.5 hours to drive there from Comrie. Park your car at the ‘Park & Ride’ next to the airport (closest place to you when you arrive at the city, after leaving the motorway). Take the tram into the city centre. It’s incredibly easy to visit one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.
