Honokowai is a great little neighborhood just north of Lahaina and Kaanapali. It's a place where neaighbors wave walking by and people know each other. It is a mix of working residential and vacation rentals sitting along the northwest coast of Maui.

This is the most unique store on Front Street in Lahaina. If you are in the market for a sharks tooth, fossils, a hand carved fish Hawaiian fish hook, or even WWII issue Hawaiian currency, this is your store. The staff is very knowledgeable about the ocean and Hawaiian culture. This is one of the oldest stores on Front Street and a must visit.

Lahaina Town was the center of commerce for the whaling industry on the Pacific Ocean. Go to LahainaTown.com and follow the walking tour. There is shopping yes, but there are museums and historic sites everywhere.

Parks & Nature

The top of the Island of Maui is the Haleakala volcano. The view from the top is like standing on top of the world. We recommend visiting for either sunrise or sunset. For sunrise you will need to make reservations in advance with the park service, https://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm. You should make your reservations asap. For sunset, reservations are not necessary, but plan on spending some time star gazing WOW!

This is a surfers beach. Great snorkeling as well. This beach has BBQ grills, a lifeguard and restroom facilities. It is about a 4mile drive north on Lower Honoapiilani Rd if you want to take the local scenic route. You can also go north on the highway and turn left onto Office Rd. At the end of the juncture of Office Rd and Lower Honoap'ilani Rd is Fleming Beach parking.

Spectacular white sand beach! Great for body boarding! Caution, this beach can have some pretty big waves. Keep ocean shore safety in mind here. Never turn your back to the water.

If you are making a trip out to Hana a part of your stay, do not miss this beach! Small and tucked away, you will have to navigate some steps to get down to the beach, but this is a very sweet little beach. Great for body boarding and snorkeling.

I'ao features a great hiking trail along the historic I'ao stream. This is an iconic piece of Maui history as it was here in 1790 at the Battle of Kepaniwai that King Kamehameha I clashed with Maui's army in his quest to unite the islands. There is a cultural park below, that is a great spot for eating a picnic lunch, and the tap water here is famous with the locals for being fresh and sweet from a deep volcanic well.

Essentials

What can I say? If you are a family and staying more than a week, a trip to the Costco store (right on the way from the airport is a good idea. Groceries are generally more expensive here than the mainland. Gas here is about $1+ per gallon less expensive than anywhere else on the island. So if you have a Costco card, stop here for gas before returning your rental car.

Drinks & Nightlife

I get asked about Luaus all the time, and you should go to a luau if you want, but for the best dancers, Hawaiian music and a sunset cocktail check out the Tiki Bar at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel.

Getting Around

The Maui Bus service will get you around, but I don't recommend it for traveling the whole island. There is a bus stop at the ABC store just south from Maui Sands, and it will save you finding parking in Lahaina. A great shopping trip from Maui Sands to Whalers Village, and then from Whalers Village to Lahaina. The cost is $2 per person per leg, or you can purchase a one day pass for $4 per person. http://maui-bus.transit-info.com/index.php?src=bing&kid=75660184357082&kw=maui%20bus%20schedule&akw=Maui-Bus-Schedule&aid=1210562345969299
