City/town information

What can I write about York that hasn't been said before? A city full of history, the Romans, the Vikings and a great medieval city, a hub of the North and home to the great York Minster. It's also a modern city with food, shopping and culture to offer. There's the National Railway Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, the Castle Museum, the Shambles, bus tours, walking tours and lots to keep you busy for days! In this guide, I will try to highlight some of the different ways you can enjoy York and discover some of the things you can do or see or even dip into the York gig scene.

Neighbourhoods

Holgate was traditionally a rural area, just outside the city walls. This immediate area of Holgate was orchards and borders on Hob Moor, now a nature reserve and a lovely area for a stroll. It will take you to Little Hob Moor, where you can see the Hob Stone, part of its history, linked to the Plague. If you carry on from there, you come to the Knavesmire, York Racecourse, and Tadcaster Road. Along Taddy Road is Goddards, the former home of the Terry family of chocolate fame, now run seasonally by the National Trust. Other highlights of this part of York is West Bank Park, a pleasant stroll which will take you to Acomb, views of Holgate Windmill, the last surviving windmill in York and now a working mill and the Blue Bird Bakery, an artisan bakery and cafe, well worth the visit.

Cafes and Restaurants

Everyone who comes to York should go to Betty's! You can't miss it...it's right in the centre of town on St. Helen's Square. I love the Dutch Pancake House on Church St. The Shambles Market has food stalls and Spark, on Piccadilly, is a delight with lots of food choices. If you're walking into town, Caffe la Tazzina on the left, just before you go through Micklegate Bar, is another favourite. Micklegate is home to Partisan and the Perky Peacock is a cafe in a 14thC bridge tower on Lendal Bridge. For lots of food choices try walking down Fossgate and then Walmgate...there are loads to choose!
