Philippi is an ancient site. Most importantly the open air theatre is in use and there are concerts and plays at night in July and August.
The visitkavala.gr website is up to date. Tickets need to be purchased from the tourist office in the square in old Kavala. Take mosquito spray. Watching the sunset and then enjoying a nighttime performance in an ancient theatre is a very special experience
This is the place Alexander the Great grew up. It is also the site of an important Roman Battle. There is a museum. The archaeologic dig, amplitheatre and museum can be toured by purchasing a ticket during the day. In the summer it will be very hot but you can purchase drinks at the rest area

You will be able to see where the castle is on what is known as the old part of the city and you will see a road climbing up into that area. The road is full of little touristy shops selling souvenirs. You will also see many restaurants. If you follow the road all the way you will come to a church and you will see that there is a set of stairs which double back towards the castle. That is the fastest way to the Castle and it will be sign posted. There are other ways to the Castle but they involve trial and error.

Maria and Nikos have been living in Palio all their lives. They speak some English. They sell the best Feta in their store and there are the all the essentials to replace missing items on your way back from the beach. They have an organic garden so the fruit and veg is very good - far better than the average convenience store.

145 M. MerkouriMaria and Nikos have been living in Palio all their lives. They speak some English. They sell the best Feta in their store and there are the all the essentials to replace missing items on your way back from the beach. They have an organic garden so the fruit and veg is very good - far better than the average convenience store.
Lidl is very easy to get to. They have good prices on essentials and there is normally someone in the store to help you who speaks English.

This is a municipal shopping centre with a bank machine in Kavala which has fishmongers in the basement and a large Supermarket on the Main level, and loads of fruit and veg sellers on the upper level (and parking on the roof if you are brave enough)

You will pass a ruined castle and the road will go to your right. Blue Beach Bar has good sign posts and it comes off to your left. The views are stunning. The sea is very shallow. The sand is great for building sandcastles. Parking and sun lounges are free - they just ask that you buy a drink. They also do snacks and alcohol. The sunsets are amazing.

It is free to park in the sand dunes behind and to use the sun loungers and umbrellas. The bar serves drinks and snacks. It is very easy to walk along the beach into Iraklitsa to have a nice lunch in a taverna after a day of swimming.
If you are up for a new type of coffee. Order a frappe - it is an iced coffee that has been made frothy and it is a very classic drink in Greece. Nea Iraklitsa is famous for its Loukamades (which are greek donuts served with honey and cinnamon)

It is free to park in the sand dunes behind and to use the sun loungers and umbrellas. The bar serves drinks and snacks. It is very easy to walk along the beach into Iraklitsa to have a nice lunch in a taverna after a day of swimming.

Just drive straight into Kavala along the coastal road and you will see it to your right before you come to the port. Parking could be difficult but there are options. It is very easy to park near the ferry docks at the very end of the road by the fishing boats and old port and the fee is very little (2-5 euros for the day) This will mean a longer walk.
Another option is to take the bus in because the bus station is quite near the market. The bus to Kavala comes hourly near to the Miltos Super Market

The grilled sardines are called “Pandrameni” which means married because the sardines are flattened, deboned and then two are placed on top of each other before being char grilled. “Pikantiki” is a Greek version of a cabbage salad that isn’t pickled. It is made of shredded cabbage, carrots, celery and red pepper together with olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice. It is very healthy.

Getting Around
You must drive to Keramoti in Greece in order to get the Ferry to Thasos. The ferry from Keramoti is only an hour to Thasos so it makes Thasos a possible destination for a day trip
