City/town information

About 25km. Famous medieval walled town. Entry is free, although there is a central area for which entry is paying. In peak season, it can be crowded, so for the most enjoyable visit go early or late in the day. You can walk to it from the Bastide St Louis (the town centre) in about 15 mins. There are plenty of restaurants within the Cité. They are very expensive. You will find restaurants in the town centre are better quality, less crowded, and less expensive.

Travel in La Montagne Noire

This is a very rural area, and a car is essential both for getting here, and for exploring.
Cosa portare

Stock up with food and drink

The closest shops are quite a distance, so I recommend that you shop for food and drink before you arrive. You will find supermarkets in both Mazamet and Carcassonne. There is an épicerie in the nearby village of Mas Cabardès (4km) but it it has very limited opening hours.
