Aigre is one of our nearest market towns. It has a food market on Thursday mornings and a few stalls on Sunday mornings. The main tree lined square has a cafe/restaurant (Le Bilboquet), and just around the corner is Le Square. The town has many useful shops and a small Carrefour. It is the home to Gautier Cognac and has some pleasant river walks.

This is a very pretty village with a stunning château and Mill. You can walk around the village upto the church across the river, through the park and back around to the square. A lovely lunch is available in Le Porte Bleu, the plat de jour is €15 Mon to Fri. The château is private but dominates the village.

Verteuil-sur-Charente
This is a very pretty village with a stunning château and Mill. You can walk around the village upto the church across the river, through the park and back around to the square. A very short distance from Verteuil is this very old village with a couple of restaurants and an arboretum. There is a very pleasant walk along the stream and through the trees and a L'argentour is easily found with outside seating and an excellent menu.

Tusson is a very old village with a circular flower walk, Abbey ruins, Potters sculptors and artists. There is a fabulous cake shop (closed Tuesday and Thursday). A restaurant and an épicerie. It has a lovely shop selling local duck products.

This is a very pretty lake with a restaurant serving Asian fusion meals. It is popular and often has live music. The lake is great for fishing. (License needed).

Mansle is another nearby town with a small market. The Charente river runs through it and you can hire kayaks. Paddling up the river is a lovely thing to do. There are a selection of cafés and restaurants. There is a large supermarket called Superu and an Aldi.
