Food with good views

The Lewinnick is a perennially popular mid-range eatery about a 30 minute stroll from the house (also has parking). Great food and stylishly decorated with stunning views back to Fistral Beach. Booking essential for large tables but smaller groups will often get a table in the bar area and there's usually room for a drink outside. We recommend the Asian influenced dishes, but really it's all pretty tasty!

We ❤️ the Fern Pit. Gorgeous views and a charming retro vibe. Food is basic cream teas/ cakes/ hearty crab sandwiches but the breakfasts are the best thing on the menu. What makes it really special is the steps down to their own landing where at high tide their little ferry will take you across to the soft sands of Crantock Beach. Swim in the Fern Pit 'lagoon' at low tide or walk round onto Crantock Beach itself.

This is the nearest place to the house to grab a bite to eat or a coffee. Friendly staff and good food make the Sea Spray a must visit. The mochas are yum. Turn left out of the house and follow your nose to the sea. Look for the steps that lead down to South Fistral and you'll spot it.

Locals split Fistral Beach into two halves - South Fistral is the end nearest to the house and North Fistral is where the shops and restaurants and the Headland Hotel can be found. A ten minute walk along the back of the beach, North Fistral has a selection of surf shops, the Stables Pizza, Rick Stein's Fish and Chips and Curry, The Fish House (excellent!) and the fun Beach Bar serving nachos, pizzas, brekkies and a smattering of fun nights from Mambo Mondays to Samba Terrace Parties. The Headland Hotel has a gorgeous spa (spendy) and the Samphire restaurant provides high end dining.

Sightseeing

Newquay harbour is a picturesque working harbour, busy with families on the sheltered beach enjoying the soft sand and clean water, seals and seagulls stealing food, fishing trips and other water-based activities like kayaking and jet-skiing. It has a street food style food offering called the Boat House. Great atmosphere but be warned, everything has to be ordered from an app and it gets really busy! It's fun and the food is good but don't go too hungry or you'll end up, well, hangry. Try Newquay Activity Centre for kayaking etc.

A small aquarium well worth a visit. Takes a couple of hours, usually a cost saving to be made by booking online.

Cornwall is packed full of National Trust and similar privately owned gardens. They are mostly on the more sheltered South Coast so are good to head to if Newquay is feeling a bit breezy. Glendurgan has a great maze, nearby Trebah leads to a private beach and was a location in the Secret Garden film remake, Trelissick has stunning views down the Estuary to Falmouth from its own shale beach. Newquay's nearest NT property is Trerice which is small and charming and does a great cream tea!

Great for families

For children up to around 8 years old (and steam engine enthusiasts of any age!) we recommend Lappa Valley about 5 miles from Newquay. Lots to do in a pretty valley.

Flambards is a brilliantly manageable theme park near Helson on the Lizard. A bit of a drive, you could combine it with a trip to insta-famous Kynance Cove or life-style hot-spot Porthleven. Tiny compared to the big-hitters like Chessington or Alton Towers it none-the-less has enough to keep older children entertained and adults will enjoy the fascinating (and very well executed) Britain in the Blitz and Victorian Village Exhibitions.

Neighbourhoods

11a Pentire Road is part of the Pentire Headland to the West of Newquay town. It's great location between the town centre and beaches has stunning walks from the doorstep as well as easy access to the buzzy pedestrianised town centre with it's good range of shops and restaurants. We recommend circular walks around the Gannel Estuary at low tide across to the beautiful Crantock Village or across Crantock beach to the C-Bay cafe and spa, or out to Pentire Headland, especially to catch the sunset. There's great walks around Fistral Beach and Towan Headland past the Huer's Huts and back through town.

Hire an electric bike or jump on a day tripper bus

As with all rural areas, buses tend to be of the once an hour variety and circuitous but the Atlantic Coaster is a great way to admire the coastline. See Firstbus.co.uk. Electric bikes are massive down here (that extra power helps with the hills) and can be hired locally from cornishwave.com. There are also good cycle routes from Padstow to Wadebridge with plenty of hire options and routes past local vineyards! Council car parks are generally free after 4 or 5pm, and most car parks can be paid for using an app. Be careful at North Fistral though as this car-park has cameras.

How to sound born and bred Cornish

You won't hear it that often any more but proper Cornish is brilliant! Dreckly - we'll get round to it (once we've had a pasty and a pint of Doombar) Me 'ansom - my lovely. Also used as yes, that'll do nicely thank you. Mizzle - a refreshing combination of mist and drizzle. Geddon - get on with you, stop pulling my leg Proper job - ah, that's been done properly! Anytime anyone mentions the Tamar, make a joke about passports. The Cornish love a debate about the order of the clotted cream and the jam on scones 😂. Controversially we ❤️ Nadia's blueberry version.

Pack for all weathers

No such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes. Let's be realistic, Cornwall is a peninsula and weather blows in from the Atlantic fast. Wonderful when it's sunny, it's just as exciting when the weather turns. Bring a waterproof coat and warm jumper and if it sounds windy and looks wet remember, it's never as bad once you embrace it and get outside! Also, being in the rain definitely earns pasties. Cheap supermarket wetsuits are great for summer but all the local places hire them too. Our nearest hire place is Quiksilver Surf School on Esplanade Road.
