Food Scene

This small cafe is tucked away in a little strip mall 15 minutes away from our place. The food is always fresh with a great selection! They make a ridiculously delicious dip that comes with pita bread and you wont find it anywhere else because it was made up by the chef, involving a Mediterranean and southwest flavor. The staff is always super helpful and kind. I always recommend this place for people that like Mediterranean style.

Drinks & Nightlife

This legendary bar is located 15 minutes away, right at the edge of Texas and New Mexico. This is the exact spot mentioned in Marty Robbins' classic ballad, "El Paso," because he stopped in its parking lot in 1957 and was inspired to write the song. Allegedly the margarita was also invented in El Paso so you should get one there! It's open from lunch to late night!

Parks & Nature

20 minutes-Do you like gators? Well, here is a pile of them! Back in the 1950s and 1960s, downtown El Paso's San Jacinto Plaza featured a pond filled with live alligators. They'd entertained citizens since the 1880s. The gators are long gone, but have been replaced with an impressive fountain at the Plaza de Los Lagartos (Plaza of the Alligators). The fiberglass sculpture of a pile of colorful writhing gators is the work of the late Luis A. Jimenez Jr, who often saw the real alligators in his youth. Jimenez was known for his gaudy, imaginative fiberglass polychrome figures, and we're happy he got this commission instead of some mournful cubist. The plaza sculpture was dedicated in June 1993.

30 min away is the World's largest man-made illuminated star called The Star on The Mountain. The stars at night, are big and bright! *clap clap clap-clap* deep in the heart of Texas! So says Texas, although a similarly big mountain slope star in Colorado may be even larger. This one is 459 feet tall and lit year-round- Make sure to catch it on highway I-10 close to downtown.

At 30 min away, this is the highest aerial tramway in the U.S. Over a mile high at its apex- a bird's-eye view of two US states and Mexico! We super duper HIGHly recommend! There is also an adjacent B-36 bomber crash site. The scattered parts of the plane were left in place and are accessible by trail from Franklin Mountains State Park.

Arts & Culture

30 min away on the east side of 375, The museum was founded by Border Patrol retirees and runs without government help. Its exhibits feel homemade -- lots of press-on letters, thumb tacks, and yellowing scotch tape -- but full of information and glimpses of border patrol life. The message conveyed is that the Border Patrol catches dangerous criminals and saves people who might otherwise have died trying to get into the United States.

For 25 years retired Levi Strauss worker Rufino Loya Rivas built "La Casa de Asucar" around his home as a tribute to the city of El Paso. The House of Sugar's hyper-ornate statues and features were inspired by Catholic churches Rufino recalled from his youth in Mexico.
