It is hard to believe that such a significant landmark like the highest waterfall in the Caribbean can be visited for free and – as an additional plus – without any other tourists as it is totally off-the-beaten-track. Salto de la Jalda requires a 2-hour drive from Punta Cana and a 3-hour hour hike (one-way) which is probably the reason why hardly anyone visits this hidden gem. However, it is absolutely worth it and if you are looking for an adventure and one of the most spectacular things to do for free in Punta Cana, Salto de la Jalda is your place to go.

Hoyo Claro is the little sister and off-the-beaten-track option compared to the famous “Hoyo Azul” at Scape Park Cap Cana. It is considerably cheaper and less visited and therefore a hidden gem in Punta Cana. Hoyo Claro is only a few kilometers away from Punta Cana and can be reached via the main La Romana-Punta Cana highway. Once you have parked your car, Hoyo Claro requires a 20-30-minutes hike to reach it.

Playa Bibijagua is perhaps the most active beach in the Punta Cana-Bavaro areas. Here you will find a grand shopping plaza called Plaza Bibijagua, with over 100 stalls for touristic items such as beach clothing, cigars, inexpensive jewelry, shells, rum, coffee, beach floats, snorkel masks and the famously known aphrodisiac, “Mamajuana”, a local liquor made by the locals.

Playa Blanca is Spanish and means “white beach” and that’s exactly what perfectly describes it – it is without a doubt the whitest beach in the whole area of Punta Cana. Take a stroll along this marvelous stretch of beach and enjoy the stunning scenery. Don’t forget your sunglasses. The sun and especially the white beach might blind you.

Playa Uvero Alto is already 25 miles away from Punta Cana’s International Airport but still considered to be part of the Punta Cana region. And the beaches in this area justify it because they are not any kind of less attractive than in the other areas. While the sand is a bit more golden and the water not as turquoise as in other parts of Punta Cana, Uvero Alto scores with less frequented beaches, elegant resorts (all of them are quite luxurious) and a more low-key atmosphere compared to the main beaches of Punta Cana.

Are you looking for THE secret spot to go, a true hidden gem and insider tip in the (extended) area of Punta Cana? Then check out Playa Esmeralda! Until recently it was one of the most remote beaches in the Dominican Republic, but it got better accessible with the new resorts which are under construction since 2018/2019. So far, it is still an absolutely gorgeous stretch of beach, like what you expect in paradise when you get stranded on a beach with absolutely no infrastructure (except of one hotel which opened in 2021 at the western end of Playa Esmeralda).

Neighborhoods

For tourists, Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial is the highlight of this city and where most of the important tourist attractions are located. The old center is a delightful mix of history and modern Dominican life. Crumbling 16th-century ruins scattered between wonderfully restored colonial buildings are a constant reminder of this city's incredible history. Founded by Christopher Columbus in the late 1400s, this first city of the New World is where Columbus lived and is buried. Today, the entire colonial district, Zona Colonial, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many of the historic buildings house museums, restaurants, and hotels.

City/town information

From being a fishing village, Bayahibe became an exceptional tourist area that is increasingly welcomed by many foreigners who visit this beautiful and unique Caribbean island. Thanks to the warm temperatures throughout all the months of the year, it is always a good time to travel to Bayahibe. If you go to visit Saona Islan, this will be probably the place where you will take the boat from.
