On the slight slopes of the Pohorje Mountain range only a few kilometres south of Maribor, the University of Maribor Botanical Garden invites visitors to explore the world of plants and history.

Maribor Castle: One of the most remarkable architectonic monuments of our city grew exuberantly right in its centre: Maribor’s town castle is surrounded by the busy squares of Grajski trg, Trg svobode and Trg Generala Maistra and in the castle you can visit the Regional Museum of Maribor, which is home to many collections of great value that will certainly impress you!
The castle, which boasts several constructional and style periods, was been built by Emperor Friderik III between the years 1478 and 1483 for the purpose of fortifying the north eastern part of the town wall. The castle was in the course of time changed into a rich feudal residence.

On the place where the street Vetrinjska ulica separates from the square Grajski trg, stands the mansion Vetrinjski dvor, the most important bourgeois house in Maribor, actually it was an old estate, which when it changed its owner also changed its name (Breunerjev dvorec, Naskova hiša, Berdajsova hiša).
History
Its core dates from the 14th century and at the same time it is built in a late Baroque style. It has a beautiful stone cut portal, which is crowned with the coat of arms of the Counts of Breuner. The house chapel of St. Florian, in the south tract, was concreted in 1519, in the eastern wing, which stands on remains of the old town wall, are the remains of a hall where between 1785 and 1806 theatrical performances were organized.
The building, which until 1814 was the seat of the regional office, is a beautiful example of a large town mansion, which with four wings closed off the courtyard, uniting administrative and houserooms.

LENT; Lent is the most delightful and the oldest part of the city of Maribor. The oldest vine in the world grows its deep roots in front of the Old Vine House, and has witnessed many stories that have taken place on the banks of the Drava River.

The confirmed age of this “Žametovka” or “Modra Kavčina” vine is over 400 years, which won it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes. The Old Vine is a symbol of the rich wine culture of Maribor, Styria, and all of Slovenia.

Around the year 1540 it was built in a fortress shape, the present image is from the year 1830. It got its name from the time when sentences were pronounced in it. Due to its shape the Judgement Tower is also known as the Round Tower.
* Minorite Monastery; The church represents the central building in the Minorite monastery, the only medieval monastery in the town - the oldest preserved part of the church is the nave, which dates from the 15th century. The church's present appearance dates from the 18th century when it got its Baroque facade and tower.

Up to the 17th century it belonged to the so-called Austrian nuns’ provincial order in Vienna, later it belonged to the Štajerska nuns' provincial order with its seat in Graz. In the year 1784 during the reforms of Emperor Joseph II the monastery was abolished. It became the military barracks of the 47th Emperor's Royal infantry regiment and served for military purposes right up until the year 1927.

From the spot, where once the Maribor castle used to stand, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the vines on the slopes and of the whole city. Piramida is a popular excursion sight for the people of Maribor and other visitors.
How to reach the top?
The path, which rises above the city park along the southern slope of the hill, is abundant with grape vines. Descending you can choose another path or continue along the crest towards the west and turn your walk into a longer recreational march.
On your way you might meet inspiring cyclists and horse riders and amidst the rows of vines you might see an animal or two. The wine growing hills offer favourable natural surroundings for different animal species; you might come across deer, hare, different reptiles, pheasants and songbirds, butterflies and insects and even foxes!

Plague Column; The plague broke out in Maribor for the first time in the 17th century, causing the death of a third of the inhabitants. In appreciation for the cessation of the plague the inhabitants of Maribor in the year 1681 erected the Plague Column – a pillar bearing an image of Virgin Mary. In the 18th century this was replaced by today's monument, which is the work of Jožef Štraub. Arranged around the statue of Mary, Mother of God are six saints, all intercessors against the plague. The Plague Column is located at the main square Glavni trg, and past which leads the road Koroška cesta.
