Sightseeing

The most westerly of the Lakes, Ennerdale Water is considered by many Lake District enthusiasts as something of a well-kept secret. Cut-off from the rest of the Lake District by road, access is only possible from the West, just 15mins from Rowrah Hall. A deep glacial lake, it has a distinctive character of its own. There is a sense of tranquillity, ruggedness, self-will, wildness, a feeling more of Scotland or Scandinavia. Its exceptionally clear water serves an abundance of fish and other wildlife. The lake also enjoys many hiking and cycling trails.

This remote and dramatically-sited fort was founded under Hadrian’s rule in the 2nd century. Well-marked remains include the headquarters building, commandant’s house and bath house. Hardknott Pass itself, is a challenging, twisty single-track road right through the middle of the Lake District, with a 1:3 gradient, continuing through to the Langdale Valley, and on to Ambleside. Worth the drive.

Buttermere – the lake by the dairy pastures – is 1.24 miles (2 km) long, 620 yards (570 m) wide and 75 feet (23 m) deep. The classic combination of lakes and mountains has made this popular with visitors since the beginning of tourism in the Lake District. A visit to Buttermere is principally for its natural attractions – as the area offers some of the best walking country in Lakeland. There is a footpath running round the perimeter of the lake, and lovely walks to the summits of Haystacks and Red Pike.

Cogra Moss is an artificial water retained by a substantial dam across Rakegill Beck, created as a reservoir about 1880, and discontinued as a public water supply in 1975. It has a pleasant setting surrounded on three sides by Forestry Commission planting on Lamplugh Fell and Knock Murton. There is a small roadside car park at Felldyke, from which there is a good bridle path some half a mile long to the Tarn. It is popular with anglers, in pursuit of brown and rainbow trout with which the tarn is stocked. There are several miles of Forrestry Commission paths through the woods.

Situated in the original cellars and warehouses of 1785, The Rum Story has carefully recreated the essence of time and place, from the misery of the crowded slave ships and life in the plantations, to the decadence of the punch houses. The attraction is a journey into Whitehaven's history as one of the busiest ports in Britain, as well as the history of how Rum came into these shores around the 1700's. The Vault can also be hired as a bespoke venue for up to 100 people.

Arlecdon village (which Rowrah hall straddles with Rowrah village), developed in the 19th Century, as the industrial revolution demanded more and more coal, limestone and high grade iron ore. Arlecdon and the villages around it – Cleator Moor, Frizington and Keekle – were a maze of railways, quarries and mines which produced the materials for iron works in Cleator Moor and Workington. The Whitehaven to Ennerdale Cyclepath is a 10 mile surfaced cycling route from Whitehaven on the west coast, passing through Cleator Moor, then to Sheriff’s Gate, near Rowrah. From here it is only a short distance along quiet roads toEnnerdale Bridge, Ennerdale Lake, and Ennerdale Forest. Rowrah itself, took its name from Rowrah Hall, which was the first home to be built here in 1703, by the Skelton Family.

In the Market Square are three sculptures by Conrad Atkinson, an artist of international repute who was born in Cleator Moor in 1940. They are a memorial to the once thriving mining industry. The three sculptures represent the Miner, the Phoenix and the Hand. At the entrance points to the old railway track are metal sculptures designed by the children from local primary schools. Outside the library on the Market Square is a blue plaque reminding us that the artist L.S. Lowry often stayed in Cleator Moor to paint the buildings.

Ennerdale Bridge is a small village on the winding road that leads from Cleator Moor to Ennerdale Water, and is a collection of largely modern dwellings spanning the River Ehen. Ennerdale Water is the most westerly of the lakes, and the most remote, so it offers, even in high season, a place to escape. The Ennerdale valley, around Ennerdale Lake, contains one of the largest forests in Cumbria, and has more than 20 miles of forest road, and many other paths open to the public. Ennerdale Bridge village also serves as a crossroads for the West Cumbria Cyclepath from Whitehaven to Rowrah, and Wainright's Coast to Coast Walk and is a popular stop-off point (Rowrah Hall provides accommodation for walkers and cyclists of these routes).
