Food scene

Sure, it's not BBQ or queso, but ESK is an Austin classic foodtruck-turned-restaurant. The menu is primarily Japan influenced (think bento boxes, seaweed salt, small bites) but the flavor combinations span the globe with Filipino, Mexican, Chinese, and broad Americana touches in just about ever dish and sandwich. Check out the back patio area if the weather permits, and speaking of permits, be sure to park in the lot on the far left of the complex (near the tattoo parlor, of course) to avoid getting towed.

Casual local brewery (with multiple locations, but we like the one near the guest house the best) that boasts creation of the most popular IPA made in Texas: Electric Jellyfish. The pizzas are also noteworthy, with the Banh Mi being our personal favorite. Try a little of everything!

Slightly higher end local restaurant which started out as a local favorite food truck (related to another local favorite in north Austin: Barley Swine). Cocktail menu is superb, and the local beer selection is typically top notch. Dishes are upscale Americana (think locally sourced greens, gourmet burgers, finessed use of bone marrow, game fowl). Parking is a bit of a downer, but it can be found on nearby side streets.

Neighborhoods

Barton Hills is a central Austin neighborhood that borders Zilker Park (where the ACL festival occurs) and includes the best spring fed urban swimming hole in the universe: Barton Springs. The neighborhood is known for some challenging hills if you're a jogger, but we feel it just adds some spice to the workout routine. If you are looking to really spice it up, the entire western edge of Barton Hills is actually the Austin Greenbelt, and there are multiple trailheads in the neighborhood to access miles of urban hiking trails and water holes. Barton Hills is generally considered to be an affluent Austin neighborhood, but there are pockets where redevelopment has yet to occur, and as a result it is often referred to as being in transition. That said, this only refers to the quality of construction and not the safety of the neighborhood, as Barton Hills is exceptionally safe. There are laundry and mini-mart options within or on the edges of the neighborhood, but we do not consider them to be within reasonable walking distance to the house.
