Cathedral Grounds
A Georgian Italianate palace in an idyllic English landscape. Ickworth's impressive Rotunda - a magnificent showcase commissioned by the 4th Earl of Bristol to house his priceless treasures collected on tours around Europe in the 18th-century - is an architectural marvel. For 200 years, the eccentric, and sometimes infamous, Hervey family added to the treasures inside and out, also creating the earliest Italianate garden in England. The exquisite craftmanship of the finest Huguenot silversmiths is breathtaking, and you can follow the family's history through outstanding portraits by Gainsborough, Hogarth and Reynolds. After walking in the tranquil parkland, experience 1930s domestic service in the restored servants' basement, sharing the real stories and memories of former staff who kept this country estate running. Ickworth offers a delicious selection of food throughout the year. Whether you're coming just for a meal, or to make a whole day out our West Wing, Squash Court Cafe and Porter Lodge Cafe offer a mouth-watering choice of hot food, snacks and a great cup of coffee. After a busy day enjoying our special place, make sure you find that special gift or memento of your visit. Explore one of three nature trails, cycle along forest tracks, enjoy the eight mile Poachers Trail, visit our historic Walled Garden and enjoy our two play areas for toddlers to teens with climbing frame, assault course, swings and slides. It was the vision of one man back in the 1800s, that saw the creation of Brandon Country Park and of Thetford Forest. As was fashionable in England in those days, wealthy industrialists wanted to have their own country seat and in 1820, Edward Bliss selected Brandon Hall. Having made his wealth from selling gun flint to the army during the Napoleonic Wars, Edward set to work developing his hall, walled garden and arboretum. The arboretum grew and grew, full of exotic species from Blue Atlas Cedar to Giant Redwoods to Monkey Puzzle Trees. In the grounds he built a small, flint knapped, gothic mausoleum surrounded by Irish Yews. This was to be the final resting place for himself and his wife but in the early 20th century they were moved to Brandon Cemetery. Today the mausoleum plays home to Pipestrelle bats and reputably the ghost of Edward's nephew, Baron Boretto. Dressed in knee breaches, a deer stalker and holding a human skull lit by a candle, he is occasionally seen wandering the grounds. What, or who, is he looking for? Opening hours Brandon Country Park is open every day of the year from dawn to dusk. The Copper Beech Tearoom is open every day, except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, between the following hours: Summer Opening hours (between April and October) Monday to Sunday 10am to 4.30pm Winter Opening hours (between November and March) Monday to Sunday 10am to 3.30pm Cost: Free to enjoy (you will need to pay for parking if you need it)

Bury Road, Nowton, Bury St Edmunds P29 5LU With almost 200 acres of landscaped Suffolk countryside there is something for everyone at Nowton Park. Nature lovers can visit the unique arboretum which is home to trees from around the world such as eucalyptus from Australia, paperbark maple from China and Kentucky coffee trees from North America. A panda was carved in 1998 and placed in the China region along with some bamboo to add to the vision of this geographical area. The Nowton Park totem pole stands 35.4 feet (10.8m) tall near the centre of the North American region of the arboretum. It is carved from a western red cedar which is the species traditionally favoured by Native Americans for their totem poles. To your left when looking towards the main house from the lime avenue, you will see the bird feeding station on the edge of the wood. In the winter a variety of woodland birds can be seen such as the blue, great and long tailed tit, nuthatch and the great spotted woodpecker The lime avenue is one of the finest examples in the UK and was planted around 1880 to give the estate a sense of grandeur. In spring over 100,000 daffodils bloom beneath the trees. Nowton Park also has a fantastic maze in the shape of a stylised oak tree (in commemoration of the Oakes family who were the former estate owners). The maze is open from May to October every year and is south of the park, 2km from the main car park. There are 2,500 hornbeam trees that make up over two miles of hedging, maintained at a height of around two metres. The centre of the maze is marked by a fastigiate oak (with upright branches). There are two ponds in Nowton Park - the meadow pond which is rich in aquatic life and is a draw for grass snakes as a place to bask, hunt and swim, and the school pond which is home to moorhens, mallards and the occasional grey heron which feeds on the introduced mirror and crucian carp. The introduction of the wildflower meadow in 1990 with wildflowers, like birdsfoot trefoil has boosted the numbers of butterflies recorded in the park. The park is also home to a large play area, football pitches, a picnic area, cafe and visitor centre.

The church will then be open for visitors 10.30am-12.30pm Monday to Saturday, plus Sundays between 9am and 12pm for services. St Mary’s is the final resting place of Mary Tudor, Queen of France and Duchess of Suffolk and Henry VIII's favourite sister (after whom Henry's ship the Mary Rose was named). Mary, the younger surviving daughter of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York, became the third wife of Louis XII of France, more than 30 years her senior. Following his death, she married Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk. The marriage, which was performed secretly in France, took place during the reign of her brother Henry VIII and without his consent. This necessitated the intervention of Thomas Wolsey, and although the couple were eventually pardoned by Henry, they were forced to pay a large fine. Mary died, aged 37, at Westhorpe Hall, Suffolk, on 25 June 1533 and she was first buried at the Abbey of St Edmund on July 21 1533 but when the abbey was dissolved her remains were moved five years later in 1538 to St Mary’s Church, Bury St Edmunds. You can find her very simple tomb to the north side of the altar. St Mary's Church was built between 1290 and 1490 as part of the abbey complex, and is thought to be the largest parish church in England, has the second longest aisle and the largest west window. St Mary's also has a unique and beautiful hammer beam ‘angel’ roof. The church is open Monday – Saturday from 10am – 4pm (3pm in the winter) but do check if you are planning to travel a distance as the church does hold services and events which may affect visiting times. Admission is free. http://www.stmarystpeter.net
