Portland’s acclaimed Thai tasting menu hideaway has always excelled at soups, with regional recipes and flavor complexities rarely found on these shores. Now, soups are soaring on Langbaan’s temporary a la carte take-out menu. Honestly, I’ve never tasted anything like this one. The briny seaweed broth tastes like it was simmered in the ocean, then splashed with sideways heat. Floating on top: fat clouds of chewy, flavor-dense seafood dumplings, shreds of king crab, and a pair of prawns. At $21, it’s not a cheap thrill. Call it a filling, unforgettable meal. 6 SE 28th Ave., @langbaanpdx — KB

The site which now bears the name Cathedral Park is steeped in history. It is believed to be one of the 14 Lewis and Clark landing sites in the Vancouver-Portland area: William Clark and eight men camped there on April 2, 1806. This spot had been a fishing and camping site for many area Indian tribes. In 1847, the founder of St Johns, James John, settled on the site and operated a ferry to Linnton across the Willamette River. In 1931, the St Johns Bridge was built on the site with 400-ft towers and a main span of 1,207 feet. It is the only steel suspension bridge in Portland.

Brewery

Portland has long been at the forefront of brewing trends, and there's plenty of interesting stuff happening beyond the expected wide range of IPAs offered at most breweries. Read on to find out what breweries should be at the top of your Portland agenda. Why Is the Beer Scene So Great in Portland, Anyway? Many craft-beer trends can be traced to the availability of a new ingredient. It’s fair to say that the modern US craft-beer industry began here in 1972, when Oregon State University in Corvallis released the assertive, disease-resistant Cascade hop. That hop would soon become the backbone of two beers that kicked off the boom: Anchor Brewing Company’s Liberty Ale and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

With Hair of the Dog, Alan Sprints became one of the first brewers in America to specialize in bottle-conditioned and barrel-aged beers: The brewery is currently home to 180 oak barrels used to age beer anywhere from six months to eight years. The now 27-year-old brewpub offers the largest selection of vintage bottles available in the country; plus, its curated draft list features high-octane old ales and barleywines as well as IPAs of varying strength. Visitors to the pub can also opt for rotating, in-house-only cask ales “from the wood” or “from the egg,” the latter being a 476 gallon egg-shaped concrete fermenter used commonly in wine production.

Keep Portland “weird”

Portland has been affectionately referred to as “weird” for decades – perhaps because of the high prevalence of man buns and mustaches. It’s also home to the smallest park in the world, a vacuum museum, and the Freakybuttrue Peculiarium – an emporium for all things weird, creepy, and just downright strange. But don’t forget the quirky, über-hipster residents, most of whom are advocates for things like roller derby, craft beer, cycling, doughnuts, and the environment. But this “weirdness” is what makes Portland, Portland. And the locals have surely embraced it.
