48 km from Canmore Self guided / easy to moderate difficulty A definite must see natural attraction in Banff National Park.  The hike/walk up Johnston Canyon is truly spectacular in any season and is the most popular hike in all of Canada. Why is it so popular? It has the greatest scenic value, multiple waterfall vistas and easy access over a relatively short distance.  Regardless of your age or activity level, everyone can enjoy and experience the Canyon. It is recommended to hit the trailhead before 8 am or after 6 pm in the summer months as you will be rewarded with a much more intimate nature adventure. Peak hours do bring bus groups and large crowds of day visitors which changes the dynamic of the hike significantly.  Not shocking, but the further that one hikes up the trail, the volume of visitors decreases.

Moraine Lake is 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) southeast of the hamlet of Lake Louise. Glacier-fed, its brilliant blue-green colour is a result of light refracting off the rock flour (fine particles of rock) in the glacier run-off which flows into the lake. At an elevation of 1,885 metres (6,183 feet), the lake does not begin to melt until June. Water levels, and its vibrant colour, peak in late June. Moraine Lake is highly popular throughout the peak summer season, when parking lots fill up before sunrise. If you are planning to visit Moraine Lake from May to October, the best way is to reserve a Parks Canada shuttle ahead of time. Learn more about shuttle and transit options to Moraine Lake. The road to Moraine Lake is closed during the winter due to heavy snowfall and high avalanche risk. Depending on the conditions, the road opens sometime between the third week of May and the first week of June and closes in October after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend (the second Monday in October).

Emerald Lake is one of the most admired destinations in Yoho National Park, with an unmatched diversity of both activities and landscapes suited to the enthusiastic traveler. It was discovered in 1882, when famed mountain guide Tom Wilson was led lakeside while rounding up a group of horses that had gone astray, and was immediately taken by the vivid Emerald-colored waters. The hike around the lake, clocking in at about an hour, is one of the least strenuous but most rewarding in the park. An incredible breadth of geological features can be viewed from the lake, including the world-famous Burgess Shale fossil beds, the Michael glacier, and an avalanche slope carpeted by meadows where moose often graze. Emerald Lake is a fantastic place to see wildlife, as animals are drawn to the important water source. Bald eagles, moose, and ospreys are a common sight, as are waterfowl such as loons and mergansers.
