Majestic Water Falls

Beautiful water falls grace this region with many an easy drive and /or a great nature hike to get to. Here are just few examples of many.
Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are only a few minutes drive from the cabin. You can access these beautiful falls by easily accessible walking paths with overviews. For more adventure there is a 2 mile trail hike between overlook points if you up to more of a challenge. Parking is available at both falls but for Upper Mesa there is a parking fee during the summer season. The highway is only accessible by vehicle or ATV in the summer season and snowmobile in the winter.

Cave Falls is a 20 ft tall and 250 ft wide waterfall inside the western boundaries of Yellowstone National Park near the Idaho-Wyoming border. It is 16 miles from the cabin via Cave Falls road. Once you leave the pavement the road is dirt but can be negotiated with 2 wheel drive. It is considered one of the best kept secrets in the park because of relative remoteness.

For the hiking enthusiast, a couple of hour hike to Fairy Falls near the Grand Prismatic Spring inside Yellowstone National Park is worth the effort. The trail head begins just south of the Grand Prismatic overlook trail. It is a longer hike, about 7 miles round trip, but the terrain is flat through wooded area and well worth the trek.

Also inside Yellowstone NP this falls has a great visitor center at the trail head. The trail isn’t long and it makes for a good ice cream and potty stop. It is on the north side of the park and has a reputation for an opportunity to get where you may spot a bear.

Not much needs to be said for one of the most photographed sites in the world. The lower falls of the Yellowstone river was described in 1870 this way: "A grander scene than the lower cataract of the Yellowstone was never witnessed by mortal eyes." Needless to say, the Lower Falls are a must stop on any tour of Yellowstone National Park. At 308 feet, it is the tallest waterfall in the park. Since it is in the center of the park, you need to plan at least 2-3 hours, but well worth the time.

Hot Springs

Idaho has some great hot springs in East and Southeast Idaho, so that means a travel distance of about 2 hrs for a few. Consult your map or google for details. Some of the closer ones are Heise and Green Canyon near Idaho Falls. Also, some may provide a welcome and fun rest stop on your way to the cabin, such as Lava Hot Springs.
A few miles north of the park headquarters at Mammoth Hot Springs is a little known place called the Boiling River. This a corner of the Yellowstone River where a hot spring smingles with the cold river water and comes together to create a unique bathing experience. It is rustic and requires a short hike/walk (it’s pretty flat) to the soaking spot along the river. Bring water shoes, because you then climb in over river rock and there is a bit of a current so keep hands on your little kids. There are a couple of public outhouses at the trailhead. There are hotel facilities at Mammoth, but not directly near the Boiling River.

This is a little far from the cabin (roughly 2 1/2 hours) it’s the best hot springs I’ve been to, but I might be a little nostalgic, as it close to where I grew up. It is on the way to the cabin from the SLC airport. It has multiple hot pools with various levels of heat, some are very hot. The water is really clear and clean, and the minerals make me feel great the next day. It has great amenities like heated floor changing rooms and bathrooms. There is also a large pool with Olympic height diving boards and amazing water slides. The Portneuf River running through town is also a popular float. A great Thai Food restaurant is also a welcome surprise.

Grand Targhee ski area has one of the most amazing views from the top of the ski lift. The Grand Teton peak is right there as you exit the lift. This is really fun, but it is over the hill in Jackson, so plan plenty of travel time, they take you up the canyon in a covered wagon with a team of horses, and then they have a show and Dutch oven dinner. It was yummy.

Lakes/Fishing/Boating

There is so much more to a lot of these lakes than just fishing, like Jenny’s lake has beautiful falls to hike. Or ride the ferry to the far side of the lake. If you come late August or early September, there maybe huckleberries and other wild berries to pick and eat if you know where to look. There are also poisonous ones, so make sure you know what you’re doing before you partake.
The only way to describe Jenny's Lake is they should put it in a park...oh they did! There is a beautiful waterfall on the far side of this lake, and if you go in August or September there are huckleberries to taste along the trail. There is about a 3 mile trail to get around the lake, or you can pay a $18 dollar ferry fee to ride across and then the falls are less than a mile. It is up the back side of the Tetons so it’s steep. Last time we were there, there was a bear eating berries right in the middle of the bushes right off the trail.

It is very hard to describe this lake. The only way is to say, "Go see it for yourself!" If you want real adventure charter a boat at the marina and do some fishing or just walk along the shore and realize you are in the middle of the largest volcanic caldera on the planet. It is an all day event when you go into the park so plan plenty of time. The park is very popular and the speed limit is 45 so expect traffic delays because of bison or elk and photographers. You just can't be in a rush when you go into the park. The whole world love that place and so do we.

This is a huge reservoir (25 square miles), but the storms do come up quickly, but there is great fishing and people like to go boating here, but the water is cold, not as cold as Jenny’s or Jackson Lake, but still a mountain reservoir. The Snake River runs from Jackson Lake into Palisades. My great grandpa and grandpa help build the dam.

Nothing like the Tetons reflecting on Jackson Lake in the morning light to make a photographer giddy. The lake is large and scenic. Plan extra time because it is in Grand Teton National Park on the Wyoming side of the Tetons from the cabin.

Rivers/floating/fishing

There are some awesome floats and all you need is a cheap inner tube for hours of fun or you can bring your fishing pole just enjoy the rivers. The water is clear enough in some places to see the big fish. Don't be surprised to see a moose drinking from the clear water as you float by. Makes for extra excitement to an otherwise relaxing day. Big Springs is slow enough to manage very little children, don’t forget your life jackets or the fact that the water is cold and clear.
Is a football field size spring big enough to wet you interest. It is seriously as big as a football field, cold and clear bubbling out of the ground and flowing downstream as a small river. Very special place. Approximately an hour north of the cabin on good paved roads. Last time we were there a moose was casually feeding in the spring.
