Across the street from the State Capitol building, this is a perfect setting to mingle with locals over a pint or watch visiting politicos enjoy a burger. Due to our First-in-the-Nation Presidential Primary, the saying goes “The road to the White House starts at the Barley House!”

They have been making and selling candy here since 1927, so you know they're doing something right. Get the homemade ice cream for you, and the maple candies as a souvenir for the folks back home.

Just off Eagle Square, this trendy speakeasy offers upscale cocktails and dining. Step inside the barbershop and say this month's password (the answer to the riddle on the wall) into the phone to be let in through the hidden door. Staff wears prohibition-era costumes, which makes this a unique night out.

If you don't have a lot of time but want to experience the White Mountains, this is the place to go. See the ruins of "The Old Man on the Mountain", view waterfalls, kayak Echo Lake, and maybe even take a hike on the Appalachian Trail where it passes through. Cannon Mountain has a ski resort during the winter, and the tram still operates during the summer if you want to check out the view. One hour directly North on I-93.

18 minutes north of the house, this National Historic Landmark was first settled in 1782 and continuously occupied until the last Shaker died in 1992. The Shakers were a religious group that split from the colonial Quakers, living in insular communities similar to the Amish.

If you're visiting in the fall, the Kancamagus Highway is New Hampshire's premier leaf-peeping drive. It has lots of look-outs and hiking opportunities, but you'll still see plenty even if you stay in the car. Take I-93 North to Lincoln, and head east along Route 112.

Mount Major is a great moderate hike with incredible views of the Lakes region. It has a variety of trail options, ranging from the 3-mile round-trip Mount Major Trail to the 12.5 mile one-way Belknap Range Trail. This is a heavily trafficked trail, so if you're expecting solitude I would recommend one of the other Belknap Mountains, like Rowe.
