This is probably the most scenic place in Slovenia. Go there late spring or late October to enjoy the color changes. Enjoy a Kremschnitte the local pastry and visit the castle and the island. An unforgettable experience

The hike to the top can be somewhat hard if you are not used to climbing uphill, but locals past 70 years old go there daily and or weekly! Make sure to take good shoes, though sneakers are okay. It is a 45 min climb. The record is 10 min! Great views. You can also do some paragliding from the top if you book in advance.

This is the oldest medieval town in Slovenia, only 20 minutes from our house. Great museum about WW2 (and taxidermied animals) in the old castle overlooking the town.

This is a great family restaurant with such a nice terrace under the trees. It is located a 5 min drive from our house and locals go there after coming down Smarna Gora. The dishes are not pretentious and good. A good family owned restaurant

Gostilna Maček provides a wide range of Slovenian cuisine. We appreciate their outside terrace (never been inside!) and the fact that you can order take out. Their French fries and mixed salads are a treat!

Really great place to dine inside (typical and very cosy atmosphere with a brick firewood pizza oven) and outside. We love their pizza, pasta dishes and mushroom soups.

We love this pizzeria because they deliver food right to our house and have one of the best pizzas in Ljubljana, and they are only 2km away.
I would not go and eat there because their interior is not very nice but their pizzas are top!
Usually very busy in the evening so we recommend to order before 6pm if you want pizza delivered for 7pm. If you go there and order before 6pm, you can literally walk in walk out with 3 pizzas done in less time it takes to drink a beer.

Ptuj is a lovely town with Roman and medieval marks. The medieval castle is a must see with great views on the surroundings and the Drava river. Ptuj is home to a UNESCO recognized Carnaval tradition (Kurentovanje) and is also a great place to come to on Nov 11, which is St Martin Day. The town organizes many new wine tasting on that date

Parking in Ljubljana
Ljubljana is easy to get to, but finding a parking spot during the week can be a chore…parking spots are payable and the closer you are to the center the more expensive the hour. Most street parking is limited to a maximum of 2 hours, after which you have to pay again and in center. (In center it’s cca 2.50€ for 2 hours). If you are going to spend more than an afternoon or a morning I recommend parking on the big public parking lot behind the train station (the parking lot of the faculty of philosophy) for which the all day price is 3€ and it’s just a 10-15 min walk into center.

When to go to the beach or Bled
Avoid leaving Saturday morning between 8am-11am to both the beach and Bled or be prepared to spend time In traffic jams (add 30-60 min to the traditional time).Best to go in the afternoon on Saturday or leave our house before 8am.

Can I use my child stroller to go places?
If you have a young child, getting around in a pram or stroller outside of cities might be difficult. You can do walks with the stroller around lake Bled, partially around lake Bohinj, but not hike to Velika Planina, or hike Šmarna Gora. If you are serious about hiking, take the proper equipment to carry your child on your back.
