THAI VILLA (formerly Kittya's Thai) This little restaurant is a gem. The service is friendly and the menu choice is more than ample. Both beverages and food are fairly priced and it is possible to have two main courses and two wines for approximately $50.00. Service is very quick and it is possible to order and be served well within an hour, making it a perfect pre-theatre choice (as it is located in the same block as the movie theatre). Highly recommended.

Parks & Nature

This iconic playground/park, built in the late 1950's, is a must for families with children or adults with a sense of play. Children can climb in and out of the head of a giant yellow octopus or swing from seats suspended from its multiple tentacles. The slides are unique - a studded dinosaur back, the tail of a whale, spiralling inside a clock tower or inside the old women's shoe. There is a train to ride through the park, a pirate ship and castle to play in, a flying fox, an interactive water feature and much more! Adjacent to MacGregor Park that extends along the river with serene woodland & picnic areas, perfect for a relaxed stroll.

Adjacent to the Whanganui Airport is South Beach. As soon as the tide goes out South Beach is a 20km stretch of sand, excellent for a days picnic, swimming, surfing or fishing. Up in the dunes are fantastic off-roading trails. Drive south and you can reach the mouth of the Whangehu River, or North will take you to the South Mole, another great fishing spot. Once on the beach the opportunities for great family fun are extensive. The beach is not patrolled so remember to watch the tides and take care at all times when near and in the water.

Castlecliff Beach Whanganui is a short drive from the city centre. A classic seaside holiday option with patrolled swimming, a well-established motor camp, playgrounds, skate park and easy access to an extensive west coast sandy beach. Fishing and surfing are also popular but these beach users tend to head towards the south end adjacent to the north mole of the rivermouth. Castlecliff Beach gets regular swell and the beach has numerous rips and holes. Beach users should swim in the patrolled area and ask for advice from Lifeguards. While in the neighbourhood stop for a meal or coffee at Whanganui's latest restaurant, The Citadel.
