About Bridal Veil Falls Along Mpumalanga’s scenic Panorama Route, which is known for the forestry industry and its many breath-taking waterfalls, lies the particularly pretty Bridal Veil Falls. This part of South Africa is green and verdant, with natural attractions that rival some of the finest in the country, thanks to their diversity and the abundance of fauna and flora. Bridal Veil Falls boasts a 70 metre drop, and visitors look on in awe and wonder as the power of water is seen in its rawest form. Still, the misty spray and elegant thundering are mysteriously and undeniably beautiful too. It is this contradiction that continues to lure people to the falls to be a part of their unadulterated majesty. The falls are a mere six kilometres from the little town of Sabie, which is known for its relaxed vibe and pretty surrounds. There is a path through indigenous forests between the parking lot and the Bridal Veil Falls, enabling visitors to see the beauty of the landscape from different facets and perspectives before reaching the falls. This walk is less than a kilometre long and is most rewarding for its beauty, flowers, streams, ferns, and photo opportunities. However, it is challenging in places, and should not be tackled by the elderly, infirm, or very little ones. A very small entrance fee is required and public ablutions are available. The area around the waterfall may be quiet and serene, but there is certainly no shortage of fun things to do and see. These include mountain biking, white-water rafting, hiking, rock climbing, abseiling, bird watching, and fly fishing. The love for the South African and African cultures is also evident in the many curios, arts, crafts, and mementoes on sale in the region. This assures tourists of the opportunities to get wonderful keepsakes for their friends and family back home.

About Forest Falls Walking through the forests of the Panorama Route, breathing in the crisp, clear air and feeling the warmth of the dappled sunshine on your back is a truly special way to experience Mpumalanga. Forest Falls is an exquisite waterfall that is nestled just 18 kilometres from Sabie, en route to Graskop, right in the heart of this beautiful province. Did you know? Forest Falls is only accessible on foot, as vehicles are not allowed to drive through the forest. Park at the picnic spot and head out on the scenic circular route, which is seven kilometres long. The walk takes you through the forests of South Africa’s timber hub, showcasing wonderful varieties of trees and birds. When you reach the Forest Falls, which is the only waterfall in the area that is wider than it is high, you can have a swim, or simply sit on the banks and enjoy the sheer power and elegance of cascading water. Because the Mac Mac Falls are relatively close, it makes for a fantastic day’s walking to visit both of these gorgeous attractions. There are toilets at the picnic spot too, for walkers’ convenience. A hiking permit costs R20 and can be obtained from the Forestry Museum in town. Graskop is a popular little tourist town, with plenty of charm and character. Sabie is a forestry town that smacks of old-world allure, and Pilgrim’s Rest tells the tale of the South Africa mining industry of yesteryear. Adding a visit to these towns when you see the falls is a must. Local natural wonders include Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon, and the intriguing Three Rondawels. The Kruger National Park is one of the top safari spots in the world and is about an hour’s drive from this area.

The Mpumalanga Province might be the land of the rising sun, but it's also the place of waterfalls. There are actually more waterfalls around Sabie than anywhere else in southern Africa. Regarded as the most stunning of the lot, Mac Mac has twin falls that plunge some 70m into a gorge below. Now a national monument, the waterfall was not always split in two. Gold miners in the area for the gold rush blasted the originally single stream to try and reach the gold-bearing reef over which it drops. Mac Mac tends to revert to one fall during the dry season. You will find the waterfall roughly 13km outside of Sabie on R532 on both the Sabie Waterfalls Route and the Escarpment Route. A viewing platform, which allows really good views of the falls, is a little restricted by a wire safety mesh but you should just get your camera lens through the holes, depending on the camera. There are also a series of pools at Mac Mac falls - great for swimming - and a braai and picnic area, so timing your visit for lunch time and an afternoon swim is not a bad idea. A 3km Secretary Bird Trail takes you through the bush in which, if you are lucky and quiet, you will hear the calls of the robin, thrush, cuckoo, greenbul and even the odd Secretary bird. The Maria Shires Falls is a little waterfall in Sabie named by Joseph Brooke Shires Jr, whose mother's name was Maria. He played a massive role in the forestry industry of the entire Sabie region in the late 1800's. His extended family was also instrumental in the spheres of local mining and timber, which remains a central part of the heritage of this area. When his mother died, he placed her grave near the waterfall. Today, visitors can still visit her grave when they explore the Panorama Route.

These falls tumble down in a single drop for some 80 metres, or about 260 feet, before crashing dramatically into a round basin that is an irresistible jade colour. Seeing the green waters set off by the red cliffs around them is something quite unforgettable and is best enjoyed from the observation platform above. The water comes from the Sabine River, which is popular for the bass fishing opportunities it presents. In addition to the loveliness of the falls themselves, this waterfall is also a popular stop on the way to many other attractions in the immediate vicinity. These include God’s Window and Blyde River Canyon as well as a number of other waterfalls (Lisbon Falls being the highest in the province). The world-famous Kruger National Park is nearby and offers visitors unrivalled wildlife experiences, bringing many of them back to South Africa year after year to be enjoy wonderful safaris and camping. Those visiting Berlin Falls need to keep an eye out for the stunning proteas that can be found growing in the region. This is especially true of the endemic Blyde River protea, which is a gorgeously vibrant bloom that is both hardy and elegant.

If you can, begin your wander around Mpumalanga with Bourke's Luck Potholes, for they are without doubt incredible. Essentially they're the result of decades of swirling eddies of water where the Treur River meets the Blyde River, the tumult of which has caused extensive water erosion over time. The result is a series of cylindrical rock sculptures that look as though they would be more comfortable on the moon. To see these geological wonders (it is no surprise to learn that they've made it onto Frommer's 500 places to take your kids before they grow up) that are an amazing array of white, yellow and dark brown eddies of colour because of the soil present in the water, you'll need to travel roughly 35 kilometres due north of Graskop on the R532. They are on the Panorama Route and are one of the major tourist attractions in South Africa, so best get there ahead of the bus tours. A series of metal bridges take you right above them, if photographs are a high priority, whilst walkways around the ridges allow you various angles and viewpoints from which to take your snaps. Their strange name, in case you were wondering, comes from the gold digger, Tom Burke, who staked a nearby claim

The Blyde River Canyon (now officially known as the Motlatse Canyon) is considered one of the largest canyons on Earth and may be the largest ‘green canyon’ - it has a particularly lush subtropical covering. The Blyde River Canyon Reserve extends along the Blyde River Canyon's winding path, which at every turn offers more and more impressive views over sheer edges dropping 800m into the riverbed. All five of South Africa's primates can be see in the The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. The somango monkey, nocturnal greater and lesser bushbabies, chacma baboons and vervet monkeys are all present. Hippopotamus and crocodile live in and around the rivers and wetlands of Swadini Dam, as do waterbirds and otters. Almost every type of habitat that attracts birds is found in the The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and all three South African species of Loerie can be found in the reserve.
