Sightseeing

Walk to Mt. Tabor Park and climb straight up from the apt through this crazy little dog park access. Great place to hike and explore with amazing views of downtown. Walk about 15 mins from the apt to Division St and cross in front of the Astro convenient store, straight up into Warner Pacific Univ. on 66th Ave. Pass the univ. church and access the dog park where you ascend into and can explore Mt. Tabor Park for an afternoon with a packed picnic. Reaching the visitor center on foot is a climb so definitely take water. It can be steep and slick if it’s rained recently, but is a wonderful and wooded park to enjoy all year round. You can also drive into the park on SE 60th Ave, either by the community garden or by following signs. The visitor center is about 5-8 mins drive from the apt.

They have finally opened back up and I imagine the skate sessions are even better with fewer skaters. Our fav days are Sunday and Thurs when they have live music on the historic Wurlitzer organ. Times vary so check online for a schedule. It is one of the oldest original oak roller skating rinks in the US, over 100 years old! No experience required and wander into the amusement park or nearby park if you want to make an evening out of it. The Sellwood neighborhood hosts food and antique stores and has several walkable blocks. I’d suggest Russell’s BBQ. If you skate, remember to bring water and your patience. Sometimes there are many kids, but it’s still really fun! There’s a snack bar and costs about $12 each with skate rental.

Pioneer Courthouse Square, also known as Portland's living room, is a public space occupying a full 40,000-square-foot (3,700 m2) city block in the center of downtown Portland. The downtown area has been greatly affected by the pandemic and these days you can see some graffiti and interesting people watching. Pioneer Place Mall is adjacent and shops are back open and Portland is finally buzzing again downtown. About 20 mins by car from the apt or 35 mins on bus 9 drops you right there on SW 6th Ave & Alder. Opened in 1984, the square is bounded by Southwest Morrison Street on the north, Southwest 6th Avenue on the east, Southwest Yamhill Street on the south, and Southwest Broadway on the west. This was formerly the site of the center of downtown and dates back to 1856. An original archway and gatework from the Portland Hotel were made part of the square's design and are found today on the east side of the square.

Fun quick trip above SW Portland overlooking the river and city. For $5.10 round trip, you can enjoy a breathtaking view for a quick ride above it all. Then wander the neighborhood nearby and walking paths taking you onto the waterfront area. The tram operates load-n-go. Including travel and boarding time, cabins typically depart every 5 minutes. A trip is 4 minutes each way. Visit the upper terminal and nearby patios and cafes for as long as you wish. The tram is typically crowded weekdays 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm. We recommend visiting any time we're open on weekends. Weekdays, a great time to beat the crowds is 10am to 3pm or 6pm to 9pm.

This is a great museum and day trip! Pack a lunch and wander the grounds admiring the views after touring. Or skip the tour and hike the area. It is a wonderful museum, well preserved and the historic shower is my favorite! Please look online to confirm if they are reopened if you are looking for a tour. This is about 25 mins drive from the apt across town to SW Portland and the Pittock Mansion. Truly the best views in town on a clear blue day! You can see Mt. This is a perfect spot to spend a morning or afternoon! Drive time is about 30 mins from the apt and takes you to the gorge and the beautiful Multnomah Falls. Pack a lunch or snacks or grab lunch, coffee or a souvenir there at the visitor center. This place can get busy so take your time and enjoy the people watching if you go on a great summer day. Open year-round you can also link up with a hike (although many are restricted due to past fires) or make a stop at the Vista House (the crown of the Columbia River Gorge, a museum at Crown Point) on your way to or from. Parking is typically ample but hikes and falls in Oregon can sometimes fill all parking spots by mid to late day in summer months, on weekends especially.

The Pearl Dist is a great walkable neighborhood in NW downtown Portland. Home to the brewery blocks, pub crawls, endless coffee shops, unique shopping, Powell’s Books, hip NW 23rd & 21st Avenues, there is a lot to see! I recommend a stop at TILT for breakfast or Deschuttes Brewing for dinner, as they are pretty good for families or groups if you venture out in this area. Some restaurants can get expensive (and are amazing) but Hot Lips or Pizza Schmizza is by the slice and various sushi stops if you’re in the mood for something quick and light.

Upscale restaurant with expansive views overlooking the city. The folks in Portland aren’t picky about dress code, so dress as you like. Food is great! Some of the best Kung pao calamari you’ll ever have (and I don’t even like calamari)! Pricey and window tables can be in short supply some evenings. There’s a fantastic happy hour (4-6pm?) in the lounge where if you lurk and wait you can snatch a great view booth or table. Portland Brews and Beers

Best beers in Portland, in my opinion! With beers like Juice Jr., blueberry muffin, cloud hands, Segway dance party, and many more, this place is great! They offer nice IPAs, fruity brews like guava coconut mochi, and sours. I’m not a big fan of their food, the waffle fries and simple items are ok and the burger is pretty good. But I’m convinced most people go for the beer and add food only to keep the pours in check.

Light Raincoat

If you have a light waterproof jacket - pack any time of year! Rain in the winter can be around 45 degrees F and in summer around 65 or 70. Climate change has affected our seasons, but you can generally expect light rain followed by sun, followed by light rain, by sun and again, any time of year. It is typically not a really heavy rain and most Oregonians do not carry umbrellas, but rather wear light raincoats. Our rain is generally not constant during the day but fluctuates.
