Sightseeing

Tairua Tui Bnb is a great place to base yourself from, to see some of the Coromandels great sightseeing/exploring trips. Most of these places are only 1/2 hour to an hour to drive to (except in peak seasons, when you need to add another hour or so to your trip). Try and leave early in the morning, to escape peak traffic times.
Hot Water Beach is famous for the lovely hot water that you can sit in at low tide (make sure to get your spot about 1/2 to 1 hour earlier. Take our loaned out spades, and a bucket (to add cooler water) and start digging in the sand near the rocks, to make your own soaking pool. Remember to take a hat, beach towel, sunscreen and plenty of water and nibbles. Dig, soak and enjoy.

Great place to take a picnic and walk down to your right to sit below the overhanging pohutukawa trees. A dog friendly area, great for swimming and surfing. Great views and lovely white sand.

Go the North end of Ocean Beach Rd( the other end of Paaku) and into the car park, face towards Paaku, and there you will see Paaku (meaning 'wings of/over'). Straight out in front of you (facing nor'east) is the Alderman Islands ( ) , to the right is Shoe Island, and tucked behind Paaku is Slipper Island. Swimming/fishing and surfing along Tairuas Ocean Beach is common, although their are strong rips, so swimming between the Surf Lifesaving flags is highly recommended.

Go to the end of Purangi Rd, where you will find a lovely reserve , with shade trees and public toilets. Go for a swim in the river(making sure that the tide is not going out...if you're very lucky you may get to see the dolphins that duck into here, to get away from the Orcas, who may be further down, near the head of the river, waiting for them!!
