The area is full of mystique as there was a huge eruption here that altered the landscape and buried local villages. For this reason the area is tapu or sacred. It's a wonderful lake to explore for a swim and the wonderful views. There is also a day trip to a waterfall.

If you're looking for a day trip with an easy walk, beautiful scenery, Bush and lake swimming, lake Okataina is off the beaten track. Its 45 minutes from my place and worth a visit
