Noord is the up and coming neighbourhood of Amsterdam. Located across the IJ behind central station, it can be reached by metro or ferry. There are many restaurants, also the EYE film museum is located there. Another great area is t' Twiske, a large nature reserve in Noord.

A little bit less crowded than Amsterdam, Haarlem is a great alternative and you will probably see some things you weren't expecting to find in Holland!
