The oldest hand drawn ferry of its kind in South Africa
Dating back to 1914, the Malgas Pont is the oldest hand drawn ferry of its kind in South Africa, offering a safe crossing for vehicles over the Breede River. Situated in Malgas (formeraly Malagas) just 35 minutes from Witsand, traveling on a good maintained dirt road, the pontoon is a large floating barge operated by two men using harness and a pulley system to draw the across to the other side. If you ask nicely, you may even get to have a go yourself! The cost to cross the pontoon is R50 per vehicle.

PiliPili River Bar is situated in the Breede River Lodge, Port Beaufort, Witsand. The pristine Breede river offers itself as a world class playground for water sports enthusiasts young and old.
We are on the waters’ edge overlooking the private harbour from where our adventure centre operates.

Whale watching
It was the Southern Right whales that put Witsand on the map, especially in the 90’s, because San Sebastian Bay is considered the “Whale Nursery” of South Africa. In spring, calving Southern Right whales cruise up and down the coastline, close to shore. Each year these majestic mammals come to our shores between June and November to mate and calf. Witsand enjoys the lion’s share of this visit due to the bay being the prime nursery for cow/calf pairs.
