This is a great place to bring the kids. It is a preserved gold rush town complete with stage coach, characters in costume, stores and gold panning with rock shop. There are many historic-based interactive displays and museums, reenactments, original buildings, and people in costume who share about this original 1800’s gold rush town. No driving down the main street!

Moaning Caverns is home to the largest single cave chamber in California. The Spiral Chamber Tour leads visitors on a tour into the marble deposit of the Calaveras Formation over 165 feet before funneling into smaller passageways. Visitors may view the cavern’s main chamber by walking and climbing the narrow wooden staircase to a flat platform 65 feet underground. For the truly athletic and adventurous, from there, a ten-story spiral staircase leads down to a second platform at the base of the chamber.

Wine Tasting
Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties have award winning wine and varietals. Winery tasting rooms are located in downtown Jamestown, Sonora and Murphy’s. Murphy’s has the most tasting rooms in one area. One can easily visit multiple tasting rooms without re-parking in their downtown area. Restaurants, boutiques and shops line the downtown.
