Food Scene

Very good home style Umbrian cooking of quality served by the charming owner whose husband is the chef; this restaurant has continued to please for over 20 years, make sure you make a reservation in the summer, it could be crowded. Outside it is plain but inside it is beautiful brick work and small cozy rooms for the winter, outside a nice area behind the restaurant for al fresco dining. This is a favorite with local people traveling through the area on business, the prices are not exaggerated and the food is of consistant quality.

This couple, Cristine and Alfredo, were the first "outsiders" in the valley over 30 years ago and they have raised their family here, trasnforming an old "rudere" rundown farm into a lovely working estate complete with organic products and olive oil, which they use in the restaurant. They have a wonderful Sunday brunch, something you will not find anywhere else in Tuscany nor Umbria. A simple lovely setting, good food and normal prices. 5 minutes down the road from the house. Closed from about NYs to April, varies, open the rest of the year.

Shopping

The weekly market in Umbertide is on Wednesday morning. Watch out, don't park illigally! There is a house guide book with lots of tips and where to park. The Saturday monring market is all organic. This is a nice farmers market, both Wednesday and Saturday, on Wednesdays there is also a general market with housewares and clothing of all kinds. The fruit and veg market stalls are in the main square, there are 2 cafes there where a fair amount of expats gather. Bar Giardino is my favorite for good coffee and ambiance just down the road towards the station , on the corner.

In this little shopping center you will find your one stop grocery store, the COOP. All foods and fresh produce, deli and butcher, good wine selection and spirits. Less than 15 minutes from the house with good parking, a water dispenser across the road, a good bar/cafe' for espresso and cappucino as well as a light bite, and next door the BEST pizza in all of Umbertide and further. Always go late morning and there will not be a lot of people, in fact, about 1pm is the best time except on Saturday. Closed Sunday, hours 9-20 generally, open all day. Most Italians do not do their shopping mid day.

The EUROSPIN is much less expensive than the COOP, but does not have quite the selection, having said , you can find a lot of good buys here, I find their fresh produce - is fresh and good and very reasonable, meats and cheeses good, cold cuts, sausages, yogurt, sweets and general cleaning products, among other things - I buy my spices here (!) much cheaper than other stores
