Sightseeing

Cape Town is such a fun, vibrant city and the apartments and cottage are so well suited to walk to many of the the sights in Cape Town. The Company Gardens, Greenmarket Square, Table Mountain (need to take a taxi to the cable car) , The wonderful Bo-Kaap with its colourful houses. You can take the Red Bus to get a better sense of the City.
The Company Gardens in the inner city centre. Walk through the Gardens and see the Houses of Parliament and feed the squirrels. Wonderful rose garden at the top of the Gardens and a restaurant.

Its a must. My advice is to go up the mountain on the first clear day that you have. Sometimes guests arrive and go straight up the mountain in the afternoon. The weather in Cape Town can be quite tricky with 4 different seasons in a day and guests can miss out on going to the top of the mountain because of the weather. So always first on the list. Take a taxi from the cottage and apartments to the cable car where you can either walk up if you are very fit or take the cable car up and down. A little tip - book on-line so that you only have one queue to stand in. Once you have booked the queue to go up is clearly marked. There is a coffee shop/restaurant at the top so fun to have a coffee or a light lunch. Take something warm it can get cold.

This is where Capetonians have been buying their clothing, jewellery, sandals, crafts and nick-nacks for years, and, whilst the face of the market may have changed a little - African curios now predominate - there is still an exciting buzz as well as evidence of the city’s most colourful and eccentric characters.

Food Scene

Cape Town is definitely a foodie city with such amazing restaurants to try out. There are so many restaurants to try thats it difficult to recommend, however some of our favourites include Chapmans Peak Hotel at the foot of Chapmans Peak for their mouth watering Calamari. Sea food at its best. Willoughby at the V&A Waterfront for the best sushi and fabulous seafood. Manos Greek restaurant in Greenpoint another firm favourite. Chef Warehouse Beau Constantia for that special occasion. Wine tasting at Beau Constantia - with extraordinary views - a must. Booking required. The Oranjezicht City Market for the most delectable food and market things - situated in Granger Bay. One of our favourite if you are able to get there is the Olympia Cafe in Kalk Bay. Loved by the locals. We prefer to recommend restaurants that are not big on tourists as we find the smaller more intimate places much more fun to visit. The Olympia or OC as we like to call it has the more delicious food. Be sure to put your name on the board as you enter so that you are on the list when a table comes up. Stroll across to the Kalk Bay Harbour and take a look at the catch of the day or the large seals reclining in the sun.
High Tea at the Mount Nelson is quite an experience. Wonderful old world in this most gracious hotel. if you have an free afternoon book for High Tea. Walk through the gardens to get there.

This is a stellar culinary experience inspired by the tastes, sights and scents of India. Opened by Liam Tomlin (of Chefs Warehouse fame) and with head chef John van Zyl in the kitchen, Thali presents diners with an eastern voyage through a set tapas menu ranging from sambals, poppadoms and tandoor, and leading through to the curries, which are the jewel in the culinary crown of the experience. They do not take bookings so get there early for dinner to get a table.

Everything Else

De Waterkant where the cottage is situated is a vibrant village in Cape Town City. Mostly we walk everywhere and we love the neighbourly feel to the village with its friendly people. Plenty of wonderful restaurants and coffee shops which you can walk to from the cottage. Sightseeing from the cottage would be walking into the city, taking in the art galleries, Greenmarket Square, The Company Gardens, The V&A Waterfront, The Silo District with its Mocca Zeist Art Gallery and Boat trips in the Harbour. Try the water taxi and do a Harbour Trip and the Sea Point promenade with its glorious Atlantic Ocean. Bicycles can be hired on the promenade and take a fun ride all the way to the V&A Waterfront.

Art, Sculptures, and Gardens.

Cape Town has some of the finest African Art. From new artists to well know William Kentridge, Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser. There are so many up and coming new artists to be seen at some of the art galleries in the city. I recently did a Street Art Tour in Langa to see was happening in Langa and loved the tour and the art and artists. Let me know if you would like to do the same and we can organise this for you. Dylan Lewis has some extraordinary work in his gardens in Somerset West which is definitely worth visiting if you love art sculptures and gardens.

It may not be the southernmost point of Africa – that honour goes to Cape Agulhas – but Cape Point certainly makes you feel as if you are standing at the edge of the world. Cape Point is a spectacular sight with towering stone cliffs, endemic fynbos, breathtaking bays, beaches and rolling green hills and valleys, just 60km outside Cape Town.
