Drinks & Nightlife

This fabulous little pub at the road junction in Wollombi is the home of Dr Jurd’s Jungle Juice, a dangerous brew of port, brandy and wine. On weekends, the tavern is a favourite pit stop for motorbike clubs (the nonscary sort). You can camp for free in the meadow (no showers).

This new craft brewery is run by an enthusiastic young local and features 44-gallon-drum tables and a series of delicious beers; let the staff talk you through what's on tap. Good sharing platters of cold meats are available to soak it all up. It's near the train station in handsome Dungog, which makes a good stop if you're heading north.

Great North walk is a much-loved, iconic bushwalk that was created in order to celebrate the Bicentennial year of 1988. It travels all the way from Sydney to Newcastle, following through not only Watagans National Park, but also Jilliby State Conservation Area and Brisbane Water National Park. Walkers can opt to enjoy short sections of it or do the entire thing in around 14 days. http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/watagans-national-park/great-north-walk/walking

Parks & Nature

If you have children and its too early for wine tasting then go to the Zoo. We were surprised with how many variety of animals they had, from petting areas with Goats, Dear, Sheep etc through to Lion and Tiger enclosures and both Crocodiles and Alligators. It is very clean and well kept with all animals have plenty of space. There are plenty of picnic areas where you can take your own food which is a great facility https://www.huntervalleyzoo.com.au/
