Bookshops

Days can be spent here enjoying the world's first independent book town. Second hand bookshops and the newly restored Castle are a must see. 'Hay' also boasts many fantastic antique and vintage shops, gift shops, cafe's and pubs. Of course this town has been made even more famous, by its annual literary festival 'Hay Festival'.

Sightseeing

A walkers paradise, the nearest peaks to our Holiday Home are Hay Bluff (Capel-y-ffin) and Lord Hereford's Knob (Twmpa). Both a short drive away, a short steep climb to the top but with rewarding fresh air and far reaching views. Llangorse lake can be seen from the top of Twmpa, a glacial lake, also open to visitors.

Although now a 900-year-old ruin, it’s easy to see from these extensive remains that Llanthony was one of Wales’s great medieval buildings. In particular, its former magnificence lives on in the surviving richly decorated red stonework and superb row of pointed archways, which frame a scene that has changed little since de Lacy’s times.

A stone's throw from our Holiday Home, open to the public dates can be found on the website cliffordcastle.org. One of the earliest Marcher Castles, Clifford Castle guarded a key crossing point over the River Wye between England and Wales, 2 miles north east of Hay-on-Wye.

River Wye

Walk to the river Wye from our Holiday Home, join the footpath leading down to the river, along the back lane and down a stoney track to the left of the property, Wyeside. Benches available to look for wildlife, or take blankets for a picnic. Always bring litter and food scraps home with you. Hay-on-Wye also has a longer walk along the Wye, called 'The Warren', starts at the back of the Three Tuns Pub.
