Historical Information The site which now bears the name Cathedral Park is steeped in history. It is believed to be one of the 14 Lewis and Clark landing sites in the Vancouver-Portland area: William Clark and eight men camped there on April 2, 1806. This spot had been a fishing and camping site for many area Indian tribes. In 1847, the founder of St Johns, James John, settled on the site and operated a ferry to Linnton across the Willamette River. In 1931, the St Johns Bridge was built on the site with 400-ft towers and a main span of 1,207 feet. It is the only steel suspension bridge in Portland.

This iconic bridge is one of the most famous bridges in Oregon because of its incredible beauty and historic significance. It was designed by Robinson and Steinman. David Steinman was one of the most famous bridge engineers of the 20th Century and he specialized in design of suspension bridges. The history of this bridge is well documented, so be sure to view the HAER documentation that tells the general history of the bridge. Because the bridge is well documented in other sources, the HistoricBridges.org narrative here is intended to focus on some features and history of the bridge that might be overlooked in the larger more comprehensive histories of the bridge.

Way up in North Portland, where the Willamette and Columbia rivers converge, sits a bastion of old-school cool. It’s a place where decades-old dive bars coexist with artists’ boutiques, where longshoremen from the nearby port sit side by side with 20-something creatives, and where you can catch a live band, play bingo or trot out your trivia at one of the many bars and pubs any night of the week. It’s this blend of tight-knit community and unpretentious charm that sets St. Johns apart. And with a recent boom in independent restaurants, breweries and coffee shops, there’s never been a better time to explore this eclectic neighborhood.
